Sharper Image (in the US) sells what looks similar to an arcade table, but the top portion is missing and it's flatened out with a TV and glass on top, thus making it a table. It's quite visually appealing, but unfortunately it too is pricey.

It looks similar to THIS, but better looking. The glass is fitted, not bulging on both ends. It's really nice B)

I would absolutely love to do something like that, but my electronic knowledge is beyond terrible. There is no way in hell I'd be able to hook up a computer and joystick to that thing :(

Are there any guides you know of that are for the most novice?

It seem to me that the guy on the first video is using GameEx as frontend. I use it also on my second computer.
Great frontend.

The second link, the arcade table is really expensive !

There are definitely easier ways of doing it... you could get a small PC, attach an LCD, and plug in a USB arcade joystick. Build a cabinet around all of those things and you're done.

Now, that's the simple version. You can of course take it from there and do things like use a CRT monitor instead, or a TV. You could take apart the joystick and insert the components into a custom arcade panel that you made out of fiberboard. You get the picture. :)

If you have the time and inclination, it might not be as hard as you think.

I think you're right most Mame cabinets probably fail due to time and lack of motivation, that's why I'm not starting to build one.

Yes - it's pretty simple. All the controls, including the joysticks are just switches...

YES, this indeed sounds right down my ally. I'm rather handy with wood (no homo, please), but I'd end up ripping my hair out over the electronic wiring and such. Thanks for offering this alternative. I'll most certainly look into this when I'm done putting together this blasted work bench ;)

How exactly does MAME recognise the different controllers? For example if you have 2 joysticks, a spinner, a trak-ball, and some buttons how does MAME know what to use and when? Like if you want to play Centipede it would use the trak-ball, Tempest the spinner, Pac-man the stick. Does MAME have a config to tell which control to accept when you load that game? Do you have to use the Windows version to get it to recognize the USB properly or will DOS MAME work? Are these all connected to a USB hub? Is it pretty much plug and play with the controllers or is there some custom coding or special modules needed?

Can you set MAME to do even increments of non-filtered pixel doubling like 2X, 4X, 1:1 etc or does it always just stretch to fit the resolution of the panel/monitor?

I wonder if you could get a cheap used notebook computer and make a portable cabinet like the one in the video? Would that work?

Each game in Mame can be set up to use different controllers. You have the global config file & can build a config file for each game separately. If no game config file exists it will just use the global config.

As far as I'm aware there are USB drivers for Dos (legacy USB drivers). These should be installed in your mother boards bios for initiating USB keyboards & mice before the operating system boots up.

Most of the controllers are plug & play anyway, but look here for an idea of how they do it the right way :)

Most versions of Mame allow you to set the resolution etc. however you like. Depends on what type of monitor you want to use.. TV, PC monitor or an actual arcade monitor.

A cheap note book should work fine, although you might need to strip it from the case etc. for a better fit.

I've not bothered with Mame for a couple of years or so (except on the 2x of course), but most of these answers should still hold true.

*EDIT* Forgot to add.. MAME's actually a very amazing piece of software. People tend to get caught up in the games part & don't actually notice half of the things that you can do with it. Shame, as the games are only half the fun ;)

Is that just tied to the type of monitor? I tried one version on my PC once but it insisted on scaling up to full screen (looked AWFUL on an LCD YUK!) . It didn't allow me to just make it display at an even 2X original resolution for example and leave borders. The windows version always wanted to fill the window so I needed to re-size to get it to an approximate 2:1 scale factor. It took alot of fiddling, not something usefull in an arcade setup. Is one version (DOS, Windows) maybe better for this and give you more options in this area? I admit I didn't play with it too much and get into details.

Like you, I'm a resolution aficionado. I would never recommend that anyone use MAME with an LCD monitor, because of all the interpolation associated with the various resolutions. Definitely go CRT monitor, TV via S-video (etc.), or arcade monitor. My cabinet uses a TV, and I'm very happy with it. I used the Windows version because I couldn't get video-out through DOS.

Do you also have vpinmame installed? An Arcade machine including vpinmame is my ultimate wet dream ;)
