I made a full-sized one, it's not hard. I'm not a carpenter or an electrician or anything, I'm just a crafty kind of guy who works in marketing.
I would absolutely love to do something like that, but my electronic knowledge is beyond terrible. There is no way in hell I'd be able to hook up a computer and joystick to that thing

There are definitely easier ways of doing it... you could get a small PC, attach an LCD, and plug in a USB arcade joystick. Now, that's the simple version. You can of course take it from there and do things like use a CRT monitor instead, or a TV. You could take apart the joystick and insert the components into a custom arcade panel that you made out of fiberboard. You get the picture.

YES, this indeed sounds right down my ally. I'm rather handy with wood (no homo, please), but I'd end up ripping my hair out over the electronic wiring and such. Thanks for offering this alternative. I'll most certainly look into this when I'm done putting together this blasted work bench
Each game in Mame can be set up to use different controllers. You have the global config file & can build a config file for each game separately. Is that just tied to the type of monitor? I tried one version on my PC once but it insisted on scaling up to full screen (looked AWFUL on an LCD YUK!) . It didn't allow me to just make it display at an even 2X original resolution for example and leave borders. The windows version always wanted to fill the window so I needed to re-size to get it to an approximate 2:1 scale factor. It took alot of fiddling, not something usefull in an arcade setup. Is one version (DOS, Windows) maybe better for this and give you more options in this area? Like you, I'm a resolution aficionado. I would never recommend that anyone use MAME with an LCD monitor, because of all the interpolation associated with the various resolutions. Definitely go CRT monitor, TV via S-video (etc.), or arcade monitor. My cabinet uses a TV, and I'm very happy with it.
