Anyone have any D-Pad troubles?

I was reading an IGN artical on the GP32 and it said the d-stick clicked in all 8 directions when they used it. I popped off my d-stick, and sure enough, it can read diagonals. However, i can't seem to press the diagonals with my stick.

Is this my problem, or a problem everyone has?

same here, i think the click stick is pretty shit, some diagonal directions don't work well, especially top left. I'm gonna work on it this weekend and try to make something that raises the resistance when you press a dir'n.

i believe that if you sand down the d-stick's shaft, it'll work. I'm just too big of a chicken-shit to try it out.

Maybe I'll buy tomak real quick so I can have a spare d-stick.

Yeah, or pad the contacts inside. Although you've got to open it up and cut little holes in some plastic to do that (except for fiddling with the down direction; that one's open already for some reason...)

That said, sanding down the shaft would prolly not be a bad idea at all... I might try that. Or sanding away a little bit of the edge of the slot so I can push it further -> more contact to the microswitches...

sanding at the edge of the slot sounds better, actually. I think I have the guts to try that out.

ah, good old GP32. DIY right down to it's directional pad contacts.
indeed. I've owned tons of consoles before, but none of them have made me feel as close as I do to my gp32. my gba, for example. I always walk on pins-and-needles around it. But my gp32.. for some reason, i really feel like it's MINE.

Well, whilst I don't know how many other companies do adopt the policy of Microsoft (they claim to be licensing Xboxes to consumers, not selling them to them - they're given the license that they pay for to have custody of the box, and the box as kind of an extra) but you might find it is lol! I'm not entirely certain of the license/owning issue, if I'm honest, but I'm fairly sure I read at some point that there was one...

I think its this argument that's used by M$ to try to call X-box mods illegal. Although I think its only ever been used in Australia, and it fell on some rather long spikes of fair usage there...

Pop the stick out, and put it back in, but dont push it all the way, only about half. It fixes it perfectly.

If you want it like that permanently, file the length of the stick down.

Same here - top left direction sucks. Which makes Green Beret almost unplayable. Grrrr.
After the "A" button stuff, D-pad stuff. I will not be surprised when people start doing crazy mods, such as attaching a NES pad to the GP32, or fitting the GP32 circuits inside a GBC. Or something. Great hardware platform, bad implementation.... <_<

But is still love it, nonetheless. ;)

You mean sanding down the d-stick's shaft diameter, right? Not the length. When you play the GP32 without the d-stick it works perfectly but when you use the d-stick on the diagonal position it hits the sides of the GP32 case without letting both contacts getting hit simultaneously.
ARRRRRGH! Amazing.

You may find the reason it worked was because you didn't push it all the way back in when you put it back. Although I can imagine that that might do it for the ASR specied edition joystick (since it's a slightly odd shape)...

I don't have any problems with how the D-pad works, but I HATE how noisy it is!!!! Does anyone know how to make it "less clicky?"

Take the unit apart, rip off the plastic D-Pad cover, replace the microswitches with rubber pad contact thingies destined to break in a few montsh, replace D-Pad cover, and play without clickage until the inevitable breaking of the contacts. Then repeat.

Please note, I disclaim myself entirel;y from teh consequences of following this proceedure. It is either very likely or possibly even a certainty, that you'll break your GP32 if you follow it.

Have a nice day :D

Yes :)

Personally, I like the clicky sound. It's the handheld equivalent of clicky industrial-built keyboards and arcade sticks.

BTW, anyone have any definite success in making the joypad less sensitive? I'm considering trying the rubber washer idea, but I want to do something that's permanent, and I'm still afraid of opening my GP32.

My stick would not do diagonals, so I sent my unit back and got a replacement. Works perfectly. It seems GamePark Q&A is not up to scratch.
