You can't directly hotlink images from TwitPic like that, especially because they're uploaded to Amazon S3 relatively soon after they're posted. You have to use the image embed URL which redirects appropriately, like this:
(I would know, I work for TwitPic :P )
If you can, install nginx instead of apache2. You will find that it can handle twice as many requests without breaking a sweat. It also helps that PHP is used through FastCGI in this case instead of being an Apache module. MySQL is probably going to be your biggest problem though unless...
I can't believe how slow and expensive internet is in some areas (then again, now that I think about it, maybe I can believe it). I'm in the middle of Massachusetts and we pay about $60/month for 20Mbps internet. Glad the wireless was fixed so I'll be able to take advantage of these speeds on...

All the store really needs is a RESTful API then anyone could easily make an application to tie into the store API to at least allow browsing around. Not too sure how payment and authentication would work though... would definitely need some more thought.
Damn, I really wish I had more free time because I would love to give this a go. Is there any sort of timeframe we're looking at here for template submissions?
