    Librem 5 phone by Purism

The Librem project was just too large of one for such a small company as Purism. If they had limited the software side to be only the absolute minimum (drivers and phone stack), as Pine64 has done, then they would have not expended nearly so much money. Instead of reusing the years of software...

    Librem 5 phone by Purism

Looks like Purism has shipped the first batch. They're essentially prototypes, however. https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2019/09/purisms-librem-5-phone-starts-shipping-a-fully-open-gnulinux-phone/ I still don't understand why they used GTK for this. Qt is far more advanced and flexible for...

    Gemini Cosmo - On Indiegogo

Looks like their first batch has rolled off the assembly line: https://www.indiegogo .com/projects/cosmo-communicator#/updates/all My Gemini experience has been pretty poor in terms of quality. The Escape/Power key works unreliably even though I've never dropped it or gotten it wet. It also...

    Gemini Cosmo - On Indiegogo

If you use a smartwatch, you get the notifications and it also can keep the Gemini unlocked while you're nearby. Much more durable and cleaner looking than that button-riddled back cover they've come up with.

    Gemini Cosmo - On Indiegogo

I'm glad they're still going but this looks really ugly tbh. It would've been much, much better to keep it single display that rotates around or is removable.

Encrypted messengers: What do you use?

I'm looking for something that supports multiple mobile devices, end to end encryption, and has video and voice support. Also must not be owned by Facebook. Telegram is almost that but doesn't have video. Signal does not support multiple mobile devices or video. Those are the two I know best...

Planet Computers : Gemini - Psion Returns

I just bought a cheap Sony Android phone and use that as my main device. Sony actually updates most of their phones for some time. They're much better than any non-Nexus device in this regard. That way, I can mess with my Gemini without worrying about destroying my daily driver.

    2gb vs 4gb RAM

You misconstrued what I was referring to by my use of "they." The antecedent was the videos, not the person who made them. It sounds like for you, 2GB is sufficient but lots of people use lots of tabs, from my observations. People also often keep tabs open because they are reading at a...

Planet Computers : Gemini - Psion Returns

I've paired mine with a smart watch so I get all notifications on my wrist and can also act on most of them without opening my Gemini up. Call quality is hit and miss for me. I do like having the option of talking privately without headphones.

    2gb vs 4gb RAM

I did not find those 2GB videos to be persuasive since they didn't simulate real browsing. They just loaded a bunch of pages and did not portray interacting with them. For web application use, 2GB is the bare minimum today, particularly if you use Firefox with JavaScript. You will hate...

Planet Computers : Gemini - Psion Returns

Have you tried track control with Bluetooth headphones? I don't have any headphones with that feature, unfortunately. Unfortunately, this is a very common problem on Android. Some programs, such as the K9 email client, do have the proper mappings but Google and other Android toolkit makers...

Planet Computers : Gemini - Psion Returns

Nokia and HP were originally partners in pocket computing before Symbian/EPOC were in the picture. The two teamed up to create the HP OmniGo 700LX, which literally combined a 200LX with a Nokia 2110. I never used it but the LX series had a two way paging service which could be used for SMS...

Planet Computers : Gemini - Psion Returns

It is a good review. But I was reminded of why I had stopped reading Forbes--the awful and incessant autoplay ad videos. It literally froze my browser multiple times as I tried scrolling and I have an i7 with 32 GB of RAM.

Here's one you directly inspired. It's my Gemini plugged in next to the Samsung Gear S3 Classic I use for notifications.

    GPD Pocket

These are both pretty notable flaws in this device, imo. USB-C is able to accept power at a much faster rate but I suppose with the lower-power processor, it might not be as necessary to quick charge. The keyboard on the GPD Pocket is so atrocious though. Although I would be curious to see if...

Why do you think the hinge mechanism would have anything to do with power consumption? If anything, a second display would require more power, even if e-ink.

    Planet Computers Gemini review thread

One annoyance I discovered today is that you cannot install Samsung's Gear app if your device is rooted. I don't have a Google Wear device, perhaps they have the same restriction. Just a word of warning, reflashing your Gemini totally erases everything so keep backups! I guess I should...

    Planet Computers Gemini review thread

I shut off the keyboard haptic feedback as well. It is annoying in my opinion if you type with any sort of speed on this thing. I can touch type on my Gemini, in part because I figured out a decade ago that the secret to touch typing on handhelds is to not use your little fingers for anything...
