    New Firmware 1.3

I have no idea why this is relevant unless you're arguing that because lots of people use ROMs they don't own, GPH don't have to release the source for the GP2X firmware. That seems like a pretty odd argument; presumably most of the linux contributors whose copyright is being violated don't own...

    New Firmware 1.3

I don't understand why you think this shouldn't just be debated like lots of other things? I don't see anyone flaming GPH or anyone else in this thread. Lots of people care about this issue and it's natural that they would want to talk about it.

    New Firmware 1.3

I bought it so I could write small games for it. I've got four games on the archive and a side-scrolling shooter in development. At work I teach games development and I'd like to buy a few GP2Xs to illustrate some of the differences between developing for a PC and developing for a much less...

Why? I don't understand why you don't want to hear/read this.

    New Firmware 1.3

I am not in violation of the GPL, so I'm not obliged to not use my GP2X. As for the ROMs, no I don't have any ROMs. I don't have any pirated software at home or at work at all. I have never downloaded a film. All the mp3s and oggs I have have been ripped from my own collection of CDs.

    New Firmware 1.3

I am one of the people who complain over and over about this GPL stuff and I am a GP2X owner. As for your first paragraph, it makes absolutely no sense whatsoever because GPH and DignSys and craigix and anyone else who is distributing the GP2X is in violation of the GPL. This hasn't changed at...

    So Is Today The Day?

I must say that I immediately assumed that Cyclops was saying that GPH were lying to craigix. Clearly I can't be sure about that and obviously craigix didn't take it that way.

    So Is Today The Day?

Read through pages 10 and 11 of this thread to see what the problem is and what craigix got upset about.

    Whos Excited For Tomorrow?! (friday)

Thanks for this information! Where did you get it? Is 1.3 already available?

    Whos Excited For Tomorrow?! (friday)

craigix was on #gp2xdev last night and said that DignSys had told him that they were going to release v1.3.x (without the source code) today. According to the now-locked thread, there was some problem with mplayer and that was holding the source code up.

    GP2X Beginner's Programming Question

I have a very simple set of sprite classes in C++ (probably too simple to be very useful, but very easy to program for). Anyway, these keep x and y world positions as floats and velocities are kept as floats. So I just add velocities to positions (x+=vX; y+=vY). When it comes to putting the...

    GP2X Hw Accelerated Sdl

What's the best place to download your libs? I had the odd experience of trying them out one day on a simple (and very slow) particle demo and seeing a nice improvement, albeit with some flickering. I came here to ask about it and someone had already asked and you'd answered (SDL_DOUBLEBUF was...

That really is very nice. It looks like it will be good fun!

    Where Is The Firmware

Your three-point summary is correct. There is absolutely no doubt that people would have complained if units had been delayed. But I think that not being able to sell the thing until the source was available would have concentrated minds wonderfully at GPH and all this would have been resolved...

    Where Is The Firmware

The provisions of the GPL come into force at the point when you redistribute GPLed code. So GPH are in violation because they are distributing the linux kernel and not offering the source. To be specific, because they are not in any position to offer the source so they are not allowed to sell...

    Where Is The Firmware

You're not right. I have explained why further up the thread. The funny thing about this is that you're arguing up and down this thread and yet it is clear that you have no idea about what the GPL requires. Seriously, you should read it, or read any one of Eben Moglen's articles about it (google...

    Where Is The Firmware

What you're saying isn't meaningful because it's not your (or our) decision to make. The copyright for the Linux kernel is held by hundreds or even thousands of developers, any one of whom has the right to insist that GPH stop distributing the GP2X. What you think about when someone says, "open"...

    Where Is The Firmware

For hardware things it would depend on the contract. But it's a false analogy because software doesn't work that way. The default position for software, is that you don't have any rights to copy and distribute someone else's work. Full stop. The GPL lets you get around this by saying, "So long...

    Where Is The Firmware

But all you've written is an argument for not releasing the source. But that isn't something you can argue for because the source must be released. In short, I don't understand what you're arguing for.
  20. E

    Where Is The Firmware

Remember, the community here is only one reason why the source should be released. The other reason to release the source is that GPH are obliged to do so. This isn't something that they can choose not to do.
