@Shane R. Monroe
I disagree – strongly. OSS is frequently used commercially with great results.

As you can clearly see the vast majority of web servers are running Apache. Businesses trying to earn the confidence of customers are...
I think alot of times people over estimate how complicated working with Linux sources can be. Yes, there's some really hard stuff if your actually making changing to the code, but there's also really simple stuff – you wouldn't believe how easy it is to patch and compile a kernel for instance...
The only legitimate concern is the possibility that there will be incompatibilities between the official firmware and the Open2X firmware, but I don't see how there could be a grand multitude of incompatible firmware versions – just two. Some people I'm sure will make wild exotic firmware...
I would like to take a moment to debunk one of the more spouted excuses for the lack of a firmware source release:
“If the firmware source is released then the Chinese clone company will come along and steal all of GPH’s business”
Not True. I direct you at http://linksys.com/gpl - this is all...
Thanks for the post Rayek, it’s one of the better ones I’ve read in awhile. To me the best part of the GPL isn’t so much collaborative aspect, although that is important, but rather giving end users the freedom to control the software they use. With closed source products often I find...
I think we’re all on edge because we don’t want the GP2X to fail. We’re all on the same page in that regards, we all want it to be a success. The differences occur in terms of how much we let GPH get away with. Some people couldn’t careless about the GPL, others think it’s ok as long as...
Wasn't your last exchange with them over them not having the webspace to host the source? Then the reply was ED donating some space, and nobody has heard back since correct?
We’ll it’s Monday and still no 1.3.0 firmware, not that I really expected it to be release last week anyways. I just want to clear up a few issues, and hopefully everybody’s calmed down since last week.
I don’t see myself as the “hero of the hour” or even as getting anything done to actually...
Am I the only person who finds it odd that GPH/Dig were so careful about the WMV licensee as to not include support for WMV files despite Mplayer being perfectly capable of playing WMV of version 8 and lower? How do you blatantly ignore the player’s licensee (Mplayer / GPL) and then be so...
They never said that publicly. The "rumor" that we would get new firmware last week was based upon email corespondents between some individuals and GPH.
WMV files are a great example of how everyone would benefit if Gamepark Holdings would release the source code to their modified copy of Mplayer used on the GP2X. Mplayer is perfectly capable of playing WMV files up to version 8, so adding support for this back in shouldn't be a very hard issue...
I'm just doing my part to try to educate people on the problem. Seems like I got a few replies on my last post, I'll do my best to answer all points.
Correct but irrelevant.
I agree, stolen isn't the correct word. What GPH has done is a crime, but not theft.
Incorrect. While GPL'd code can...
Point well taken - just look at the joystick... btw, I would buy a cap from you but I've decided not to spend any more money on my GP2X util the GPL crap gets resolved.
Very reasonable speculation. It seems to be the only sane reason we've got to the point where we are. If that is the case...
