Thanks Mali. I'd seen that post and am very tempted to open it up. Sure it'd be trivial to check if the pad exists and clean the contacts. I guess that would breach the warranty though, so I'd better return it instead:-( Might have to get a quick port in first though!
Say I'm running top and want to quit it what should I press? I thought it would be "select/ctrl" and c... I guess I need to press some kind of function key to activate "select/ctrl"?

Really? Might have to wait longer than I'd hoped then. I paid immediately I got the refund but that was already 3 weeks after the reorder e-mail. Guess its all immaterial after a year+, so must be more patient!

Sounds to me like it all works pretty well, just needs some optimisation/clean up. It is a hacker device remember. In some ways its disappointing that so MUCH has been done already since the fun of these things is fixing stuff in the early days...

FWIW I agree there has been excessive closing of threads. This is a recent (i.e. last 6 months-year) development.
edit: I think Exophase's posts are some of the most interesting/insightful, so the fact he is raising this should mean more consideration is given to it...
Would be awesome if Linux on Pandora booted as fast as the GP32 did. I wonder what takes the time - must be initializing the SCSI disks and stuff! The only thing that should take over a few ms seems to be checking and mounting the filesystem. + possibly running the bogomips loop!
