    Colorful week

Even if you just glance over https://www.pyra-handheld.com/wiki/index.php?title=Comparison_Chart some may have chosen a GPD Win with 4GB RAM over a Pyra with only 2GB. Rational or not, it could lead to fewer sales, and the Pyra needs to ship a certain number to be profitable to produce at all...

Wow you must be right, I've totally ordered the wrong thing, I should cancel my pre-order and buy something else /s I've no idea what resources Windows uses these days. But my Linux desktop is idling right now with Firefox using 1.27GB _resident_ RAM, leaving not much RAM to do anything else...

When RAM is exhausted on the Nokia N900, the latency of swapping to internal flash is *debilitating*. Basic web browsing can leave the phone interface so laggy it is difficult to answer a call. Its 256MB RAM is mostly what makes the hardware obsolete now. If the Pyra plans to be useful for a...

If you make up arbitrary storage requirements, yeah. But if the 32GB internal storage is enough, then really just $600. Would also cost more than $225/yr in electricity, if running it 24/7 so that you can remotely log into it from anywhere. Might power that server for 12 minutes if you're...

    Current statistics and some predictions

Bailing out a competitor is mostly unheard of in the capitalised world. Major hardware vendors wouldn't care to do that, but I can see how making the Pandora situation right does help the overall market for niche hardware, so that more people will trust the Pyra to be a success in the long...

    Colorful week

Once there are prototypes out there and a few benchmarks have been run on them, I expect we'll see that the performance increase from 2GB to 4GB RAM is really huge (so having a 4GB option convinced me to preorder a Pyra at all), but I also expect diminishing returns beyond that as CPU...

Patchy kernel? (or other software components)

Perhaps a few Debian Developers could be bribed with a gift of a free Pyra ;) Ideally in time for DebConf16! BTW the latest u-boot package in experimental, and debian-installer in stretch, have just added support for the (yet unreleased) BeagleBoard-X15, which is not unlike the OMAP5 SoC that...

    Current statistics and some predictions

    solving for y = 900 preorders: 900 = 110.7577856 * ln(x) + 350.2383681 900 - 350.2383681 = 110.7577856 * ln(x) ln(x) = 549.7616319 / 110.7577856 x = e^4.963638709 =~ 143 days so the logarithmic equation can't be right? I'd expect something more like x = 40 days, which is around 10th June...

    Improving the keyboard background light

A matrix of RGB LEDs would have been really fun! (think disco dancefloor, demo box, or ambi-light) : But the PMIC(?) is probably limited in how many outputs it can control. The keypad LEDs are already grouped into only two or three groups, not able to toggle them individually. Obviously you...

Abusing Pyra as communication device (needs camera)

I've more or less decided to get the Pyra instead of the Neo900, there's just no communication from that project any more :/ I've been waiting too long for it, and if it ever happens now, the underpowered CPU and 1GB RAM could be obsolete. And I rarely use a phone to make calls, mostly just...

Preorders Have Started. (Previously named starts in two hours)

Actually, more preorders *every* day, but sometimes it's more-more of them than other days.

Patchy kernel? (or other software components)

I know several Debian maintainers have pre-ordered a Pyra... I'm sure the Pyra's Device Tree could be shipped in the Debian armmp packages, but patches for anything else really need to go upstream. The letux kernel patches add some totally new drivers for touchscreen, audio, etc.

Patchy kernel? (or other software components)

Glad you asked! I've been looking over this the past couple of days: 1. as of letux-4.6-rc7: 462 files changed, 152858 insertions(+), 351 deletions(-) (between upstream 4.6-rc7 and http://git.goldelico.com/?p=gta04-kernel.git;a=shortlog;h=refs/heads/letux-4.6-rc7) but that patchset adds...

    Current statistics and some predictions

After remaining at 664 preorders for quite a while, we're now at 665, which I think is where we get the rush of people all trying to be next... http://p.rdw.se/pyra-preorder.html

Abusing Pyra as communication device (needs camera)

In the empty space in my bag, that used to be taken up by laptop + charger + spare battery... I plan to put my Pyra, but also my old DSLR camera, so I can actually start using that again. I just picked up a micro-HDMI to female HDMI adaptor for about $2, to solve that problem. I'm slightly...

Preorders Have Started. (Previously named starts in two hours)

Remember that after the first batch of 1000 (to fulfill the first ~950ish preorders) there could be a long wait for the second batch, because of lead time on more LCDs and since there probably won't be funds to order those ahead of time. So, make sure you're in the first 950!

    Pyra Favorite Color

I imagine clear plastic can't be made to look crystal clear like in the rendering, because of the roughness of the moulds, which will give matt colours, or a frosted look like the prototype: https://pyra-handheld.com/boards/images/ProtoFull.png Maybe some kind of polishing of the plastic is...

    ... we're still alive!

So, I think I figured out exactly how the analog wheel for volume works: https://github.com/goldelico/gta04-kernel/blob/c1ea22da6773595ddfeac2c389031cc794bdb31a/Letux/root/volumed is an example of reading the wheel's position every 0.1 seconds, and adjusting some output mixer volumes (in 1%...
