    The Pyra Puzzle

The IBM PC was when I was a baby. The 386 was when I was in elementary/middle school. You're not that old.

    The Pyra Puzzle

Even those of us who lived through the beige era may not be very interested. I grew up almost exclusively on IBM ThinkPads, followed by a 233MHz HP Pavilion which was two different shades of dark grey. Those ThinkPads with their black housings, elegant, functional design and TrackPoint III...

    The Pyra Puzzle

Have you considered a PSP-style "transformer in the middle of the cable with the replaceable AC side attached using an IEC 60320 connector" design instead of the Pandora's wall wart design? (To quote the AVGN, "Have these, not these!") I've been having trouble finding a suitably cheap source...

Need specs for the barrel jack adapter

For anyone else who finds themself in my situation, the answer is yes. I just received the two adapters I ordered from that eBay results list and they fit and work perfectly.

Need specs for the barrel jack adapter

*nod* Sadly, my N64 likes to reboot and I no longer have my SNES. I do, however, have various controllers (some replica, some genuine) and X-to-USB adapters for use with my emulators. (USB-native NES replica, couple of SNES replicas with adapter, genuine N64 with adapter, couple of genuine PS2s...

Need specs for the barrel jack adapter

Point. The PRS-505 is more like one of my used novels that was printed in the '70s and has had plenty of time to yellow. It's on the high-quality end of what newsprint can reach while the PRS-700 is more like typical newspapers. I've got a clip-on book light that takes AAA batteries and, if you...

Need specs for the barrel jack adapter

*nod* The newsprint-like quality of the PRS-505 is about the worst I'm willing to go. If I need lighting, I've already got clip-on lights that it can share with my "hard to see what color the wall is painted"-size collection of used print novels. I'm generally pragmatic and frugal when it comes...

Need specs for the barrel jack adapter

    1. I'm not entirely sure, but some time in 2008-2009. I considered the PRS-700 and dismissed it for being less crisp (due to the touch overlay) and lacking smudge-avoiding physical buttons. 2.1. I used to use it a fair bit (never as much as used novels or reading fanfiction online... but still...

Need specs for the barrel jack adapter

Why would I replace a perfectly good $20+ PSU when all I need to replace is a $1-2 plug adapter? (And, for the record, I already have two Pandora PSUs and a PSP charger. This is the one that stays on my desk while the other Pandora one and the PSP one stay in my Pandora and Sony PRS-505 travel...

Need specs for the barrel jack adapter

The barrel jack adapter included with one of my Pandora chargers broke. (Part of the plastic ring at the end of the barrel plug on the adapter cable broke off. It still works, but it fits loosely.) Can anyone tell me the dimensions of the connectors so I can eBay up a replacement? I wasn't able...

USB 3.1 Type C connector is ready for production

...and the other one I ordered works too. :) Not a huge surprise given that the listing describes the proper behaviour in quite a bit of detail... albeit, with the focus being on listing Sony Camcorders with which it's compatible. At the moment, they seem to have misconfigured their shipping...

USB 3.1 Type C connector is ready for production

One of them arrived and it works. :D Unlike the other two I already had, when I plug a thumbdrive into it and then plug it into the Pandora, it Just Works™. It's this item, in case anyone wants one for $2.

It's the details that take longest (Part 3)

No, that's a good video, but it just expands on part of the blog post. He basically says that within the first minute of the video. (The first in the series covers another part of that blog post but even both parts together don't cover the whole thing.)

It's the details that take longest (Part 3)

Best explanation I've found for why anything beyond 48KHz audio is actually counter-productive: 24/192 Music Downloads ...and why they make no sense by Monty from Xiph.org TL;DR: 96KHz and 192KHz sampling rates are spectral padding to allow for the limitations of low-pass filters built from...

It's the details that take longest (Part 1)

I've never tried an X-Stylus, but I'm fine with the regular one (when I'm not just using my fingernail) and care more about cost and durability.

USB 3.1 Type C connector is ready for production

I don't have test leads fine enough to measure the resistance (hence my use of the word "seem") but, about six months ago, I tried following some instructions for using the port in USB Host mode and couldn't get the Pandora to see any of the guest devices I tried. (rebooting each time, just to...

USB 3.1 Type C connector is ready for production

I had a similar idea so I've poked around and spent about $3 ordering a couple of adapters which make specific enough claims about their uses that I'll be able to threaten to file PayPal disputes if they don't work.

USB 3.1 Type C connector is ready for production

I don't suppose there's a way to force the port to host mode in software? I could live with having to do that with my existing adapters.

USB 3.1 Type C connector is ready for production

Any ideas where a Canadian could get such an adapter cheaply? I bought two different designs off eBay and both seem to have left the pin floating.

Bringing the case and PCB together

I almost missed it too. It was just luck that I did a double-take on the position of "the" @ symbol, given that it's not something so frequently used that you might actually want to duplicate it like the period. (Of course, even then, duplicating a key like the period would just be a workaround...
