    Coolboy/Retrogame RS-97 - Spiritual successor to the Dingoo A320

I first saw this device mentioned on another thread here a while ago, and I'm surprised it didn't have its own thread yet. Packing an upgraded (but still rather old) MIPS SoC and able to run a community-developed version of gmenu2x, the RS-97 more or less picks up where the long-discontinued...

Good dumb mobile retro-gaming console? What do you use now?

The chip in the A320 only ran at 360MHz stock and could be overclocked up to about 450MHz. The chip in the RS97 is specced for 600MHz, but the factory firmware downclocks it to 528MHz. According to the dingoonity thread, it can be safely overclocked up to about 625MHz. Max-for-max, that's...

Good dumb mobile retro-gaming console? What do you use now?

You don't need a pandora battery any more. You can softmod your PSP without hardware hacks. Now that is slick. I already have at least half a dozen handhelds that will do the same (or more), but for $40, I just might have to get one anyway. It's so nice to see devices like this get picked...

Sorry, that's outside my scope of expertise.

    GPD WIN 2

As cool as this looks, it's not $600 cool. I'm not allowed to spend that much on toys without a damn good reason, and I doubt the wife will accept "but look how cool!" as a good reason.

    PSP Big Battery Mod

You have to use the PSP board because there is some sort of IC on it that the PSP needs to see to know it has a battery installed. While you might be able to use the lipo protection board in addition to that (I haven't tried), it seems unnecessary. I would stick with just using the PSP battery...

Gameshell - Modular, "open", gaming handheld (kickstarter)

Those are already available, for preorder at least. I'd already have ordered one if it weren't for the crappy microswitches on the X and Y buttons. I realize the layout doesn't give much choice, but I really hate those things - especially when you're mix and matching with membrane buttons.

Gameshell - Modular, "open", gaming handheld (kickstarter)

I think the one thing that would have pushed me over the edge to backing this would have been a landscape/GBA option. All you would need is a new case and a two-piece controller, and the rest of the pieces could be rearranged to fit. It would also allow for shoulder buttons, which are kinda...

Gameshell - Modular, "open", gaming handheld (kickstarter)

Whoops. Fixed. Yeah, the display is probably the cheapo hobbyist display you can get for the RPi for like $12. Still better than the atari lynx, though.

Gameshell - Modular, "open", gaming handheld (kickstarter)

This is an interesting take on the whole gameboy-zero modding thing. Instead of hacking up an old gameboy, this is a complete system (roughly the size and shape of an original gameboy) that can be assembled without tools. The case, display, motherboard, battery, controller, and speakers are...

Snail Mobile i7 Gaming Phone May Actually Make it to Western Markets

You're right to have doubts. The SoC is newish, but it's not exactly a barn-burner. It's a cheap, middle-of-the-road affair. Lots of little cores that are probably great for regular smartphone use, but aren't exactly ideal for emulation. Seriously. I don't know why a plastic cross is so...

Snail Mobile i7 Gaming Phone May Actually Make it to Western Markets

If you're in the market for an absurdly-large android phone with built-in gaming controls, you may soon be in luck. China's Snail Mobile has plans to sell its upcoming 6" gaming phablet outside of Asia. I wouldn't hold my breath for these to be offered free-on-contract from Verizon or Sprint...

The Wonder smartphone console hybrid thing, as presented by Nolan Bushnell and... Shakira?!

No, the PGS was a total scam from the start. This appears to be a "well-intentioned" concept cooked up by people who saw a bunch of trendy buzz words in a trade publication somewhere and threw them into a pitch without any concept of the technology required or the market demand. This isn't the...

    Ok, I gave in...

My problem with the piboy zero (and most similar projects) is the microswitches or domes for the buttons. They never feel right, and microswitches are prone to breaking if you get a bit exuberant in your gaming. That gamegirl 2 though... It has proper membrane buttons, L1/R1 on the back, and...

    PSP Big Battery Mod

Pulled off how? Pulled off the board? If so, you probably took the solder pads with the strips and you're trying to solder to the board substrate (which won't work). Can you post some pics so we can see what you're dealing with?

GPD Win (x86 Computer / Palmtop)

There are a number of atom STBs get away with a simple metal heatspreader, and those are inside a sealed plastic box without any airflow. I believe an aluminum lid exposed to the outside would be sufficient to reject heat at least as well as the heatpipe and tiny fan they're using now. I only...

GPD Win (x86 Computer / Palmtop)

I would expect the base to contain the power management components. You would have power going up, and HDMI, audio, and USB (a single channel going to a hub on the base PCB?) going down. I assume the KB & game controls would all be USB. You would need a handful of other lines for things like...

GPD Win (x86 Computer / Palmtop)

I still maintain the only way to cool something like this properly is to put the SoC behind the display and use an aluminum lid as a massive heatsink. Moving the SoC and supporting chips to the top half, in addition to removing the need for a fan/heatspreader in the lower half, would leave you...

What are you playing this weekend/these days?

Yup. It's a bit complicated, but as long as you're not on the latest firmware, it's totally doable without having to buy an expensive flashcart or anything. The coolest part is that there are "VC injectors" which will take old console ROMs and trick the 3DS into thinking they're legit VC...

What are you playing this weekend/these days?

I recently discovered that 3DS hacking is a thing, so I had to buy one of those and install custom firmware. Currently playing Blaster Master Zero on it, despite having at least a dozen other devices on which I could be playing the original.
