    Microsoft XBOX Series X

The good news is they've already announced the Xbox Series X XXXL Edition. In all seriousness, I don't think there are any surprises here beyond the questionable form-factor. We already knew both MS and Sony were going with bespoke AMD APUs, just like the current generation. We knew they'd...

RetroFlag GPi Case - A 'GBZero' that isn't janky

As anticipated, somebody is making a CM3 cart for the GPi case. Unfortunately the dimensions of the CM3 and SODIMM socket require the cart to stick up a bit, ruining the classic GB lines. Preorders here.

Full details (for pricing and availability, if not how it actually works) just unveiled at the Made With Google event.

System76 launches high-end Linux laptops with fully open source firmware

These things definitely aren't for everybody. Hell, I refuse to pay more than $400 for a laptop simply because anything that can't be done on a cheap laptop should be done on a desktop anyway. But I know there are folks here who take open hardware very seriously, run linux exclusively, and...

System76 launches high-end Linux laptops with fully open source firmware

I'm sure this is an OEM chassis. They likely made a deal with the OEM to use some particularly easy to implement hardware, so it's probably a slightly modified version of a chassis being sold by several other "manufacturers".

System76 launches high-end Linux laptops with fully open source firmware

Not really handheld gaming related, but I thought this might be of interest to some of the folks here. Premium Linux system builder System76 has finally unveiled their fancy-pants laptops with "coreboot" - a fully open-source minimal firmware that replaces the traditional BIOS/UEFI. They're...

    New Atari Console Coming (Ataribox)?

Probably not. Neither AMD nor intel's mainstream architecture lends itself well to scaling down to ~2W where you need to be for handheld use. If AMD wants into the ultramobile market that intel has effectively abandoned by shitcanning atom, there's a really obvious route. License some ARM...

Miss the GCW Zero? The RetroGame RG350 is the modern equivalent

Are you asking for different stick colors, or for different types? While I think a flat analog controller like what they used on the 3DS or PSP would have been a heck of a lot better for pocketability, the taller thumbsticks are the only option available. Color-wise, it looks like your options...

Miss the GCW Zero? The RetroGame RG350 is the modern equivalent

I don't have one so I can't comment on battery life, but this does have better SNES and PSX emulation capability compared to the LDK and similar.

Miss the GCW Zero? The RetroGame RG350 is the modern equivalent

"Retro handhelds" with aged MIPS chips are basically a dime a dozen these days. There have been at least 10 released by Chinese shops under various names in the last year in a variety of shapes and sizes. They're all in the same price range, largely interchangeable, and none really stand out...

    New Atari Console Coming (Ataribox)?

Their indigogo page is still sitting at the "prototype" milestone, and they haven't posted an update for more than two months. Even that update didn't show or explain anything that wasn't in the original campaign description. Crowdfunding campaigns are not one of the things where "no news is...

    Nintendo Wii U

Necroing this thread because I finally got around to picking up a WiiU a couple weeks ago. You can find them pretty cheap on ebay these days (I got a complete kit in good shape for under $100). For those unaware, the system is fully hackable, and there are some decent homebrew games available...

    RetroStone

I appreciate that they're trying, but I honestly don't know what the point of the upgraded version is. Now that the Retroflag GPi case exists (and is cheaper), this is kind of superfluous. It's a lot chunkier and less elegant, and while the allwinner chip may be more powerful than the RPi...

    SID of the day :)

Do they have a hall of shame? If so, I'm a shoe-in.

    Creoqode Lyra

It's nice to finally see a high-quality, professionally produced CM3 handheld, but why on earth did they go to all this trouble and not include analog sticks, a dedicated menu button, and L2/R2 buttons? The amount of extra work/money would have been trivial, but the extra functionality would...

    Nintendo Switch

I know it seems like game costs keep going up, but that's just inflation for you. Most switch games are $20-$60, and while that high end seems really high, it's significantly cheaper than what top-tier games used to cost when adjusted for inflation. Considering that games back in teh 80s and...

    Raspberry Pi 4 released

The issue is that the USB-C power circuit doesn't follow the spec. There are two pins that are each supposed to have a separate resistor, but they designed the board with a single shared resistor for those pins. It's a small thing, but it means that many high-current power supplies will limit...

    Nintendo Switch

This would be pretty tempting at $150, but $200 is a bit much for something that can't be plugged into a TV. I could understand if the video out was limited to portable-mode quality (the hardware in the mini is likely weaker than the regular switch), and I guess I can see Nintendo not wanting...

RetroFlag GPi Case - A 'GBZero' that isn't janky

I've got mine, and the build quality is as good as I expected. Hopefully I can get up to microcenter this weekend to get a zero to stick in it.

    PC games recommendations 2019

Then to be honest, you're probably hosed. Pre-builts are almost as big a ripoff as laptops - especially at best buy. It's a shame you're not within driving distance of a microcenter. If I were in your shoes, I'd spend $500 on a normal desktop PC and upgrade to a discrete GPU later as funds allow.
