So don't allow novice users to buy the high-end model?

    Bugs and Calculations

I'd be perfectly happy if all the official support for Pyra was small RAM/eMMC and I had to jump through hoops to enable the bigger sizes... just saying.

    Bugs and Calculations

No, just for software use. On the N900, for example, it locks/unlocks the screen. On the Pyra, I would see a switch being useful to lock/unlock the externally accessible controls.

Will there be a slider or switch on the Pyra?

    Bugs and Calculations

Whoa, as long as we're talking about removing the eMMC and some RAM, does that mean we can later populate the board with a better eMMC/RAM? Maybe it'd be possible to just offer it upfront as an option in the first place? @EvilDragon Would it be difficult to put a poll on the preorders, such...

Yes, I understand that - and planning to preorder myself - but it may be difficult to convince others to do so. :(

On that topic, what are the benefit(s) of preordering rather than just waiting until there's stock? I assume probably earlier shipment, but anything else?

Cellular Discussion [Split from] Bugs and Calculations

Compositors are complex and tend to have bugs because they try to do complex things, such as 3D effects which typically link in OpenGL drivers including shader compilers (LLVM). This is a whole lot of code. It would definitely be better to put network transparency in Qt, at the widget layer, so...

Cellular Discussion [Split from] Bugs and Calculations

Wayland loses some X features, like network transparency (you can run X apps in VMs or even completely separate machines, but have them display locally). Arguably, this feature is already semi-broken because modern toolkits just render everything at the application and send pixmaps, which...

I'm planning to run Gentoo, myself. https://www.mail-archive.com/alsa-user@lists.sourceforge.net/msg31357.html :(

I don't want to have Pulseaudio installed.

Cellular Discussion [Split from] Bugs and Calculations

AT commands sounds fine, but the hard part will be routing the audio properly (possibly with echo cancellation?) and low latency...

Cellular Discussion [Split from] Bugs and Calculations

Huh, revisiting the data, not sure what I was thinking. Is my info on voice calls killing data correct? Maybe the Pyra should prefer 3G and switch to 4G only on demand?

Cellular Discussion [Split from] Bugs and Calculations

Am I understanding correctly, that even the PLS8-US does not support T-Mobile 3G (only 2G and 4G), and does not support VoLTE, so as a result: Voice calls will not work outside of 2G coverage Voice calls will cause data interruption and drop to 2G speeds When 2G is discontinued (can't be that...

    ... we're still alive!

Last I checked, it didn't. But in any case, I sure hope the Pyra won't require Pulseaudio for anything.

+1. If not for the mobile connectivity, I'd probably be going with GPD Win. Too bad they still count Bitcoin traffic... That's probably going to use hundreds of GB alone for me.

Cellular Discussion [Split from] Bugs and Calculations

$20/mo gets you 2 GB data, not unlimited. T-Mobile doesn't even offer unlimited 4G. Also, Sprint's coverage tends to be better.

Cellular Discussion [Split from] Bugs and Calculations

Noooooooooo :( Does the 4G module not support all the 3G/2G frequencies anyway? Is it true VoLTE is not supported? Does that mean voice coverage may be bad? Do we even know modem MOQ will be an issue? Just need 500 people in each region to buy one, right? Is the modem module easy to change...

No reason the volume wheel can't work with good old ALSA and SysV init. :) (I'll be doing the same probably.) (FYI, per-application volume settings is also possible with plain ALSA, but a bit more complex.)

Or just reuse the same standard implementation.
