Global Chip Shortage Threatens Production of Laptops, Smartphones and More

I know that many companies in Shenzhen tend to favour local buyers. As far as I know it's more cultural (and maybe some business reasons as well) than anything government-enforced. And big companies that buy in large quantities are also more likely to get their orders fulfilled than smaller...

    COVID-19 / Coronavirus Pandemic

Wearing a mask at a con sounds like a good idea to limit the spread. As for your own protection, the protection from vaccines seem to wane after a few months. So getting a third shot sounds like a good idea. But you probably shouldn't get medical advice from a handheld computing forum.

    The Caring Corner :)

Covid infection doesn't prevent reinfection on the long term. Many people have been infected multiple times. Also even though most people recover from covid, about 10% seem to suffer from long-term effects ("long covid").

I've seen someone tweet about sending letters stamped with stickers from bananas, it said that all letters were received without any problem.

Opening the Pandora Lid - VICTORY

I understand, I was glad that Linux-SWAT did it for me a few days ago!

    Box86 - Linux Userspace x86 Emulator

Sorry about your Pandora. My LCD cable was dying (along with the case), but Linux-SWAT transplanted a new one. :) Thanks. Let me know if you want me to test things for you.

    Box86 - Linux Userspace x86 Emulator

I've compiled the latest versions of gl4es and box86 on my Pandora yesterday. It seems that I can no longer run things with wine, I get an error about kernel32.dll failing to load. It used to work before (I just realized that I should have checked with an older box86 binary to ensure I'm testing...

    The Official Gaming Communication Thread

Yes, the "MVS" (Multi-Video-System) was the original name of the arcade version of the Neo-Geo. The home version was called the AES. Another option you can try is to play it with an arcade bios and set it in "free play" (or just keep adding coins).

Assembly restart. Software work. And maybe our next SoC?

I've used my GPDWin 1 extensively for one year or so and then stopped using it because I had the impression that the battery had swollen, but I recently opened it and saw nothing wrong with the battery. I've got it running again and it's still working. But I don't run any GPU intensive games...

What are you playing this weekend/these days?

The Stellaview (a satellite modem for the SNES) was used to stream some high-quality music for some games, so this isn't completely out of touch with the original material. Also, chiptunes and low-res pixel art was a design constraint, not a design choice. Some artists really did great with...

    COVID-19 / Coronavirus Pandemic

According to the scientific community, the most common variants (Omicron) are probably as deadly as the original virus. Vaccination and natural immunity explain why there are less deaths.

What are you playing this weekend/these days?

I fell into the X-Piratez timesink. It's a mod for the original X-Com games (well, for the OpenXCom Extended port), that has you lead a group of female mutants pirates in a post-apocalyptic world filled with monsters, mutants, bandits, zombies, nazis, aliens, fanatics, ninjas, robots, mad...

Keeping ideologies separated isn't always a good idea. Free software doesn't exist in a vacuum. It's there for a purpose and this purpose is often linked to real-life situations that are tied to other ideologies/struggles. For example, plenty of free software people advocated Signal for people...

Gitlab will no longer be free! Any good, free, opensource alternative to GITLAB ?

While a decentralised repo could be interesting, there's no reason to use blockchain for this. Git already has everything needed to work in a decentralised way. There could be problems, but Blockchain wouldn't solve any of them.

Gitlab will no longer be free! Any good, free, opensource alternative to GITLAB ?

It's still free software. And the hosting is still costless. They just limit computing time because crypto-miners are abusing it. Nearly every service that offers "free computing time" are facing the same problem :(

I like the stilts comparison: Imagine you built your house at a time where everyone was walking on stilts. Everything is high up and when you need to grab something from the top shelf you think to yourself:"Thank god for stilts, life would be more complicated without them." It's what's...

Writing a Pandora/Pyra article for Pixel Addict magazine- I have some questions.

I remember seeing it called the "Craiginator" or something like this before it got called the Pandora. Two months, with an extra month buffer just to make sure. Sounds good.

    War in Ukraine

From what I understood about wheat, many countries have already started planting more wheat than usual at the end of last year (wheat future had already risen due to concern about the Ukranian situation so it was profitable for farmers to plant more wheat) and there should be more than enough to...
