Looks like GLS doesn't operate in the UK. If I'm looking at the right thing, the FedEx fee for paying VAT at the border is "2.5% of advanced Duty/Tax with a minimum of £12 which ever is greater", so don't panic about that I guess.
Looks like there might be a Brexit deal after all.
But as I understand it, we are leaving the customs union in any case, so will have to pay VAT at the border instead of paying it to ED.
When ordering a Pyra, what are the shipping options at the moment?
After searching around a bit, I'm not sure whether or not tariffs are the same thing as import duty, or whether that's the same as "third country duty" which appears to be normally zero for laptops and cell phones. I once got charged a second import tax along with VAT on a DVD course shipped...
The preorder is a voucher and was charged without VAT, so probably just counts as money. Anyway, it's the value of the item that matters for import. I wonder what happens if the item is paid and shipped before the transition but arrives at the border afterwards (though that's not likely)...
I'm also in the UK and wondering what will be the effect of Brexit on my Pyra order. I guess we'll have to wait for the negotiations to be officially over to find out.
SARS/MERS/ebola can be effectively contained by isolating the people with symptoms and their close contacts, so we didn't need a lockdown for those. At first there was an attempt to contain Covid-19 too, but it didn't work because the infection rate from presymptomatic/asymptomatic/mild cases...
Some people are saying that the mRNA stuff works by modifying your DNA, which is just plain wrong. Others are saying there's a risk it might modify your DNA by accident, a claim which requires advanced knowledge of biology to reason about, so that might come down to who to believe more than most...
The official position is that mRNA vaccines can't change your DNA, and this is all unfounded rumours based on a misunderstanding of how it works. Though I can't say I really understand how it works myself. Do you claim that all these people are lying?
I'm using Fedora on my main computer and I actually prefer the "break everything at once" strategy. Though looks like I upgraded 24->26->28->30 without major issues, and ended up doing a clean install for 32.
It can get pretty bad if you ignore it for too long. Like blindness, organ failure, horrible infections in your feet. What do you mean the cure is worse?
If a large proportion of the population catches it, I think 1% deaths would actually be a lot for the world to deal with. And there also seems to be a larger group who don't die but have very unpleasant long-term consequences.
Anyway, we'll see what happens in Florida.
My understanding was that it turns out to be mild for most people. Do you mean it's a serious disease because there's a risk to anyone of it going badly?
@Robert Taylor The problem is that a significant minority get seriously ill, and the virus has very successful spreading properties; so if...
Masks are somewhat effective, but not entirely. That was my point. If you don't have any particular reason to think you're infected, wear a mask any time you go into shops etc, for the sake of shifting the numbers at the population level. If you do have a reason to think you're infected, staying...
@Djoga'Ro Masks don't prevent transmission, they just reduce the probability a bit, so they work mostly at the population level. Wearing a mask doesn't make it OK to go out if you're infected.
