Nifty. It reminds me a lot of the Ubuntu Netbook UI.
You can see some videos of it all at http://www.canonical.com/projects/ubuntu/nbr. Obviously a shell is intended to be a lightweight thing, and the netbook UI depends on GNOME, and there's no ARM build available. Yet. Anyways, cool job!
Drives can be formatted by tools other than the Windows ones available to most users. And as you note, it works just fine with Windows when formatted elsewhere. You're right about cross-platform compatibility, but in the wrong direction.
