I've only started playing with Mame this year. The seemingly endless game library is both a blessing and a curse. I've been loving the really old school stuff, but now I want to see how "modern" it can go. Finding this stuff through trial and error (not knowing game names) is a nightmare though.

What's the "cutting edge" of MAME on the '2X? Suggest me some games? :)

Honestly, if you want the glitziest games, Final Burn Alpha can play them a bit better.

FBA is a subset of MAME but somewhat more optimized, specializing in 68000 + Z80 combo games.

This includes: CPS1, CPS2, Cave, Taito and loads of other games.

Check out Donpachi on this. Awesome stuff and seemingly fullspeed (and I mean 60FPS, frameskip 0) with 22khz sound.

I find MAME is better for games from the 80's and odd stuff from the 90s. If you want to stick with MAME try:

R-Type and Dragon Breed. Great games! But you'll need a decent overclock to play these at an acceptable speed.

Also try Parodius and Simpsons. Fun stuff and these run reasonably well.

There's also Outrun, Space Harrier. Fun games but require a bit of overclock as well.

To add to what slaanesh already said, the same goes with NeoGeo games. Some of them (the earlier ones) are playable in MAME for the GP2X, and some of them are very impressive (e.g. Metal Slug ;) ). As you might already know, GnGeo2x for NeoGeo games (well FBA2X also can play some of them), but I'm sure that you already know this, as you've been playing Metal Slug X. :p

biomechanical toy looks great and runs pretty well. similar in play to metal slug

overtop looks and plays good. doesn't work in gngeo emulator so this is the best place to play it. racer

vfive looks and plays great... but doesn't support sound. still fun. shmup

Final Star Force looks good and plays good. shmup

Thanks for all the suggestions! I'm loving GnGeo2x and the CPS2 emu, that's kind of what got me wondering how far MAME could go on the '2X. I'll definitely check out some of these titles. I hadn't even looked at FBA before. Y'learn something on these forums every day. :)

Ah, this is good news. I was bummed about it not working in GnGeo2x.

Shoot! You beat me to it, I was just going to write that one!

Try "Blaster"

it has to win a prize for "best game with most generic-sounding name". Hand-rendered 3-D graphics! It must be played to be appreciated, screenshots do not do it justice, and its audio picks up where Robotron left off, if you know what I'm talking about...
