I thought of ripping DVDs instead of downloading from the net because I have dialup, very slow. I saw that a web site call Vizionari.net that shows you how to do it, but how are the results? Do you just resize the film and it is just like a downloaded file? Does it work well with the GP32? Thanks!!

zboy9,

Ive ripped quite a few movies and other DVD stuff (Friends, Simpsons), straight from DVD doing exactly what ive writen in the guide and because your only compressing the DVD once, the quality (least i think it is) is a bit better. Normal downloaded stuff is already compressed using DivX3-5 and you need to redo that to GP32 format which means compressing again, this guide theres only 1 compress.

Try it on a short film first of all and see for yourself, the whole thing takes little over an hour for a 1.5 hour film :)

The reason i searched for a way to do this and wrote the guide is exactly the reasons you want to do it :)

Thanks for replying. That makes me feel better. But when you rip a DVD it doesn't ruin it does it? I know that "ripping" it doesn't mean physically, but does it still work after you rip it? Thanks again and always.

:)

Ripping a DVD does not hurt the original. Otherwise I would owe Netflix a lot of money.

All ripping a DVD costs you is time.

Great Guide Bonks !

I'm going to give it a go !

One question though, with the quality being better seeing as it has only been compressed once will this mean it takes up more memory ?

Can you fit a two hour film on one SMC ?

Cheers.

Easy easy easy! hehe - I've ripped and converted to loads of different things...

Tip - make sure the DMA mode is enabled on your DVD-ROM drive, or it'lll take bloody ages to rip a DVD.

If you need to know what I mean by this, just let me know...

Betty,

no it doesnt make them bigger, only thing that makes them bigger is the bitrate you set and a couple of other bits and bobs that i dont understand, just listen to what my m8 Jim DiGriz says :)

as for a 2 hour film, yes its well possible but it'll take up the whole SMC card normally and the bitrate will be low, i did forest gump (around 136 mins) and it came down to 118mb at bitrate of 64, the quality was spot on tho.
