Little John

I heard many great things about Little John, so downloading the most recent version (0.4) and trying it out on a few random games, the games ran _really_ slow. Now I did play a few that ran great, but alot of my favorite games dont run at a playable speed, FF2, BlasterMaster, SolarJetman, etc... (they usually play decent for the first few minutes of the games because there is little activity, but once the games pickup, the speed goes down considerably) (sound on and off and sound quality settings didnt seem to effect it one bit). And _all_ of the games exibited some nasty jerky graphics...

Am I doing something wrong? I heard it was near perfect speed, or if its just not as fast as that, is there a list of "playable" games for LittleJohn?

Is there a way to set it higher than 133mhz to get full speed?

Hi.

All of the games i have tried on the NES emulator have no problems, there is no clock changer AFAIK and in my opinion you shouldn't need it for just nes games i thought they would all run full speed. Mario runs fine though that is all that ive tried so far.

could be just compatibility with some games.

I did notice that if I dont touch _any_ audio or video settings when playing a game (and ignore the jumpy graphics and clicking/crackling sound that happen on all games I have played) then I can play a small % more of the games (like FF2). But if I adjust any of the settings (even if I adjust them back) then the game runs _very_ slow...

I tried 20+ games and the clicking and graphics problem is in all of them, is there any way to remedy this?

I just wanted to see if anyone had experienced the same, I dont want to bug the author. I heard great things about LJ, but what I have seen isnt that great, I mean its better than nothing, and a good emu, and ill use it reguardless, but from what I seen its been overhyped, its not "close to perfect" as I have heard say plenty of times, its far from it...so has it been overhyped or am I just doing something wrong?

try the 0.3 version...apparently it is supposed to be better (although I haven't had any trouble yet)

On the list you have, I have played a fair bit of blaster master without any problems. I am using Little John 0.4 and I have tried many games without any problems :D

BlasterMaster for me starts getting really slow right when you go through the first door (about 30 seconds into the game) too slow to be playable. (although sometimes even before that if one of the enemies shoots too many of those steel balls) (like 5+)

This is using version 0.4

And is there a way to make it read more than 8 character names?

What setting are you using because while Blastermaster slows down it's still just as playable as the NES version. Going through that first door normaly slowed down in the original.

You should only be experiencing about a mild speed loss compared to the original.

my settings:
240 lines: off
2x sprite limit: off
sound: on
sound filter: low
sound quality: med (best for NES games)
vsync: off
video: normal
frameskip: 0
frameskip adj: 00%

This is generally my seting for all little john games.

Version 0.3 is fullspeed, whereas 0.4 exhibits slightly less speed in most games. Also, Blaster Master has slowdown when you enter the first door in the actual game. Blaster Master has slowdown in a fair amoun of the game, actually, lol.

no problems here, try fiddling with your settings perhaps? :)

games that work fine here:

- Adventure Island
- Bubble Bobble
- Megaman I - VI
- Mario Bros. 1-3
- Hook

I think I have the settings pretty good now, its working "decently", although the graphics are still a bit jerky and some games are still unplayable (even a small frame skip on some games can make a difference).

Yeah I know Blaster Master normally slows when you enter the door, but usually when you drop down and keep going it speeds back up, doesnt seem to happen when I play it though.

The biggest problem is the menus are touchy (not as bad as the os9x menus) but still pretty bad, so when I scroll up alot of times I am not scrolling up (or down) PERFECTLY so it has a "little" left or right pressed which causes some settings to go awry and be changed as I scroll.

Are there any hints or tips about settings on certain games?
