I was looking to buy a GP32 and was wandering if i needed SMC straight away?
I mean can i still play games and use media functions without the card?

And another thing do you recommend i buy GP32 with a backlight? and what differnece does it make buying a Turbo charged GP32?

Thanks alot, sorry to be annoying.... ;)

Yes, you need to buy a SMC straight away. A gp32 is pretty useless without an SMC. (unless of course you are planning on buying commercial boxed games).

I would recommend buying a FLU unit as i couldnt imagine not using it now i have it. However people do claim that normal units have lighter screens than FLU units when the light is turned off. Its down to preference, but i think its definitely worth the extra cash.

A turbo charged GP32 is just one which is guaranteed t clock to 166mhz. All GP32's can overclock to 133mhz, but only some can do 166mhz. If you buy a non-turbo charged GP32, you could still get a 166mhz one, because the turbocharged ones have been modded. Its all down to whether you need 166mhz (which you will) and whether you want to take the chance. There was a poll on overclocking ability not too long ago, so you could check that out to see your chanes of getting a 166.

anyway, hope you get one and enjoy it... :)

Yeah, you'll need one straight away. The official gamepark games are available as download or pre-installed on smcs, but i'm not sure if you can add things to them, or if that is the only thing that can be on these cards. I haven't actually seen a flu in the flesh (?) so I don't know what they look like running. The non flu versions have the nicest screen I've seen on a non flu handheld. Every gp has a processor with a gauranteed max speed of 133 Mhz. People have written programs which make use of the fact that many of them are overclockable to 140/150/166. The turbo gps are normal ones tweaked to make them _definately_ usable at these higher speeds. Hope that makes sense :) Jace

:p got non-flu its nice, btw, 166mhz at this times really not that important, opensnes9x runs fine at 156mhz. at least for me it does.

While the non FLU are apprently a little clearer, I personally think if you're going to watch movies on your GP a FLU is a must have. I encoded 2 anime and the screen was practically black without the light (granted one took place at night but the other was fully daytime.)

Anyway I had to go without a SMC for nearly a week after i got my GP and the only thing I could do was register it and turn it on occasionally just to look at the FLU in action. :p

but you cant play it in bed in the dark can you? :p

Also, some GP32's can't even overclock to 156mhz, so if you buy a turbocharged one, you at least know that it will do 166mhz, and you wont be stuck with one of the rare ones which will only do 133mhz.

166mhz is useful/needed imho on several things, such as Opensnes, GPcinema and GPDoom (extra wads).

yeah, you really need an SMC. i had my GP32 for a few days before i got an SMC and all i could do was look at the intro screen

WOW what a response! Thanks alot guys :D :D

After what you have all said i aim to buy turbo charged GP32 with back light..................the only problem is that it may be a looong time before I can save up that sort of money!

Another couple of questions....sorry:

What is the quality of film playback on the GP32?

I heard about online play through the internet is it true?

Thanks alot everybody!

Movie playback is suprisingly good as the screen is small, with the right encoding, you can get a full movie on a 128mb card.

Online play is not an option at the moment, it is something that was planned, but I think it has been scrapped at the moment, the only real way to multiplay is via the rf link, so you need 2 gp32's and 2 rf linkers, plus the compatible games.

So after some research i dont think i will be able to buy a super charged back lght GP32.

I just wanted to know is the normal GP32 screen lighter than GBA?

And is still alot of work being done by the makers of GP32? Do they still come up eith the goods? :D

yes, the non-frontlit version looks much lighter than an unlit GBA (at least that's what i've heard, i've never had a GBA). i have a non-FLU myself, and it's pretty decent unless you want to play in total darkness.

as for Gamepark, they still are doing SOMETHING, but we can't be sure. there's supposed to be an official launch in Europe (specifically Spain, Portugal and Italy), but we've already seen a few attempts at this fail, so don't hold your breath. the main appeal of the GP32 is not the officially released things, but the homebrew scene.

Yes, the normal screen is much lighter than a GBA. But you should still get the FLU version, it is much, much better.

I went for the non-FLU and it has served me well. You should have no problems in any reasonably lit room with a non-FLU but you need to think about where exactly you will be using it. If you are thinking about playing games in a darkened room then you definately need a FLU. On a train or bus in a non-window seat or some pokey old platform waiting room etc you might struggle for enough light.

If in doubt you should definately go for a FLU version to be on the safe side as there is no simple upgrade if you change your mind later on.

If you have never experienced a FLU then a non-flu would be ok, but I would reccommend spending the extra little bit to have one

thanks for all your advice guys!

LOL one more thing, is it really woth getting a turbo charge gp32?

Sorry i know it seems like im asking the same things again but i really need to know what to buy and what not to buy.

Oh it would be nice if i could talk with someone maybe on MSN, who could tell me abit about GP32

concidering you're low on cash here's what I'd do in your case:

-non turbocharged
-FLU

Why? 65% chance of getting a 166mhz version from the ones that are non gauranteed and FLU will insure you never struggle with lighting... (except maybe if there's TOO MUCH light! )

Yeah good idea I think thats what ill do! Im willing ot take the risk!

Oh and do you reckon a 32mb card will be enough to start? with as i hav one at home already, i kno its not much and i will buy a biger one.

32 megs is better than nothing. I personally got a 128 card with my GP32 and I did not regret it. I reckon you could start out nicely with a smaller smc, but you should really get a bigger one sooner or later (these things have a habit of getting filled up all too soon...)

Yeah i understand, i think it will be ok for a short period until i get sum MORE money and buy a bigger and better one!

ahhhhhhhhhh I want GP32 very badly but its gonna take ages to save up for one :( :( :(

If only i can get my parent to buy and i pay them back whenever i get money....

I just hope GAMEPARK continues working on GP32 as i would hate to buy another dead handheld *cough* *cough*......CYBIKO <_<

Concidering how long it's apparently been around I dont think it's in ANY danger of becoming the next CYBIKO. :p I have 3 128mb SMCs one for all my games/emulators and the other 2 I'm using for movies and video.

I might buy a couple more when I get better at encoding movies.
