Question About Red Colored Nintendo Ds

I'm wondering if the Red DS systems are painted on or if it's part of the actual plastic. Reason I'm asking is because I'm thinking of getting a replacement shell off eBay. From what I hear, all the painted ones on the authentic shells are also painted on the ones from China while the solid color ones seem to be actual plastic colors on the fake shells as well.

If anyone has seen/own any Red DS (from Japan or US), is the red painted or not? If so, is the color underneath once again white or is it red paint on red plastic?

I just read some reviews for the MKDS bundled Red DS and they say the red on it is actually the color of the plastic. I don't know but I always thought it might've been judging by the photos I've seen. I also did not expect to recieve a silver painted DS when I got the platinum. The photos on the internet months before release made it look it it was some kinda chromish metal or something (though I assume this would been a bad decision, thought the DS looked alot nicer in these pics).

Well I don't think I have enough evidence yet to know if the red is paint or not and there's the Japanese Jump Superstars version and the MKDS edition and they may be different (excluding the fact that the bottom of one is black and the other is silver).
