Hello there!

I just got my new gp2x which I am planning to use as a silent fileserver etc...

so I was wondering if anyone compiled any mail server for it? also I am going to use it as a download client for bittorent plus some easy webpage...

might put the bittorent client on a extra machine if it takes to much juice...

hmm so what has been done? Anything I can take advantage off?

Going to use a usb hd for storage...

I know of no bittorrent or mail server ports for the GP2X.

You could use the samba server to serve files and there's the web server, but why tie down a portable device?

Well, it is very quiet indeed.

ya... quiet and portable... well very inexpensive... semipowerful hardware for this usage... well for linux...

Well I belive there is a bittorent client called rtorrent or something someone recomended it to me as being the one least processor drainy... going to try compile it for my poor gp2x as soon as I get a wireless usb adapter or well even lan adapter...

hmm any usb lan adapter or wifi adapters people can recomend that work with gp2x

It kind of defeats the purpose, but you can test server functionality using USB Networking and the included cable.

Huh? I'm really confused about all this. What are you guys talking about? Is there really a way to turn the gp2x into a fileserver?! I thought there was no wifi or anything like that on the 2x. Please clue me in.

There are USB host and client interfaces. You can plug the GP2X into your PC through the client inteface, you can plug devices into your GP2X through the host interface on the EXT port.

GP2X runs the powerful Linux operating system, used in servers everywhere, there is plenty of server software that could be easily ported, and a few things that already are.

So if you plug your GP2X into your computer and enable USB Networking, it is part of the network and can access the internet (if you set it up right on both sides).

Or you can plug a network adapter (wireless or wired) into the GP2X through the USB host interface on the EXT port with a special cable and then it is part of the network and can access the internet.

Once you have internet access, and a suitable server program for what you want to do, your set.

Ok thanks for the info but what kind special cable would I need? Would a breakout board work? I have one of those.
