It's a 1st edition, and the person who had it before didn't use it much. It still has an old firmware, I'm not sure how to look up what it has though... But I should probably upgrade that right? What other stuff should I do? It came with an SD card loaded up with DRMD v 4.3, and a bunch of roms. Will I have to empty the SD card before using it to upgrade firmware?

Sorry for the questions, I've been tracking this forums off and on for the last 6 months, so I may be thinking of older issues...

Have a play around with it, Load up some of your favorite old games via some of the emulators of your choice. Get a feel for the system and enjoy it for a while BEFORE you even think about upgrading the firmware. As upgrading the GP2x`s firmware can be a bit of a hit `n` miss affair for some people, And you don`t want the possibility of turning your new toy into a brick before you`ve even had a chance to try her out.

Well of course! I've been doing that from the second I got it in from UPS. It has no thumb cap right now, I've got a new one coming hopefully today, along with AC adapter, TV out, and a case. But I can't really play very long right now because it kills my thumb.

The only "issue" I've seen on this firmware (which I believe is 1.01) are the slight scanlines, which really aren't noticeable except against the orange background. So far I LOVE this thing already, can't wait to do more with it.

First Down load the manual in the file archive - thats what i would do first and have a read.

Then try a new skin !

The manual will tell you how to update the OS to v2

Do you have a PC SD card reader if so backup whats on it to the PC ready to clear it for the OS upgrade - after copy the stuff back.

Explore the card and see whats on it then what you would like to try thats not there..

And most of all enjoy...

After that try the new v2 features like setting up telnet in to the machine..

Enjoy !

You should definitly upgrade to firmware 2.0 as it starts up in about half the time of any version 1 firmware (takes about 15secs).

My joystick cap's been broken since about january, The blister on my thumb is better than the other cap, and a lot more comfortable

Don't forget to try GP2x MAME!

Also, you will want to upgrade to FW2.0.
Make sure you follow the upgrade instructions carefully.
Take note of the following:

* Use an SD card (not an MMC!)
* Format it so that it is FAT32.
* Make sure it is empty with only the files required to perform the upgrade.
* Use a power supply but failing that fresh or fully charged batteries.
