I currently have an ipod mini, and I have become very intruiged by the GP2X. My question:

Can the GP2X replace my ipod mini for playing podcasts?
I listen to loads of podcasts while driving into work and so I need an easy way to navigate the podcasts and play them. Is this so on the GP2X?
How long will the battery last while playing just audio?
Do any of the podcast aggregators sync with the like gnupod or amarok GP2X?
Is bookmarking in a mp2 supported yet?

Thanks

The GP2X music player is pretty basic, It will play mp3 and ogg files, no playlists (oldplay has though). There is no bookmarking. You can sync with amarok by adding it as a generic player. If you just want it for podcasts there are many mp3 players that are cheaper, if you're interested in watching movies, game, e-books then the GP2X is good.

There's nothing stopping the GP2X from becoming just as functional as the iPod. Nothing at all. Just a software barrier :)

I am curious just how far the battery life could be stretched to turn the GP2X into just an mp3 player. The main cpu could be underclocked quite a bit (MP3 can be decoded at 100MHz on a m68K I know, probably less for us), the second cpu could be underclocked to the point of being off. The display could be put on VERY aggressive power saving (dim, turn off). What other hardware can be disabled?

Hell, I used to use my GP32 for playing oggs all the time at work; the GP2X has much higher storage capacity so it's even better suited for a cheap alternative to those crappy, trendy ipods (plus of course all the non-music playing features of the '2X make it the clear winner ;))

It's all very punk rock :p

Some good ideas there, it'd be nice to get a program like that to save on battery life.

As far as music playback is concerned, you can replace ipod with gp2x. You don't get the ipod experience

It looks like the software is rather young at the moment, but as in OSS, that does not stand true for long. I love the game, movie and picture features of this product. I must say the reason I bought an ipod in the first place was for itunes, not the ipod. I very really use the ipod as a device while walking, it is either on my desk or in the car.

So how hard is it to code for the GP2X? What language does it work with, python, c++, etc? I would love to contribute to a dedicated podcast player for the GP2X, is there a project that anyone knows of right now?

The first thing that came to my mind after I read your post was this:

Then... after a couple of seconds... I thought... WHY the HELL would ANYONE want to use iTunes?!?!?!?!? There are SO MANY better Media players out there!

iTunes

Very much a media player and very much not a website. ;)

Oh and it is very much crap.

edit: Plus I can't believe no-one's made a Mount Ipod pun yet...

Yes PSyMastR, I am not an idiot, I know it is free.

God Ginrai, I would love to know what media players you think are better? I disagree with you, but am open to something I have not seen before.

I think I did not explain myself properly people. I do not want to be using windows at all, but linux (ubuntu in my case). Hence the reason I can't use itunes in linux ( or at least easily). I still find linux media players, podcast aggregators and synch programs rather immature and fractured in their development.
