Speakers Do Not Turn Off When Headphones Attached

Up until yesterday, my GP2X has performed flawlessly. But, now my first issue has arisen. When I attach my headphones, the speakers in the unit no longer turn off! I have read about something similar before but I believe it involved the speakers not turning off when attached to a TV, not headphones. My jack hasn't fallen out or anything and it does not seem to be mis-soldered; sound from both channels is perfect and I can even plug it in all the way and still hear it (unlike most jacks where apparently you must have it in just 4/5 of the way.) Any remedies to this or am I stuck returning it?

I am apprehensive about returning the unit for repair to Gp32z, as I do NOT want a new unit, I want this one fixed-- and I fear it will get replaced. This machine is able to achieve a clock speed of 320 MHz-- I'm sure my next unit won't.

I've heard of this problem before. It's due to the connector inside the unit moving out of allignment I think. It can be repaired if you open the unit, i'm sure I saw a guide somewhere in the FAQ section of the forum.

There are four contacts, the ground, left and right as normal.

Then there is another contact that is bridged to ground through the headphones plug when inserted, the signal tells the software to switch channels to the headphones.

If your Solder trace breaks (quite common due to the cheap connectors, improper alignment, and bad solder joints) then it will contact as you push in the headphones, and break contact once they are in, confusing the software badly.

I think the preferred fix is to solder the jack back in, and maybe remove it completely so you can epoxy it to the board by its locating pins before you solder it down.
