Well, I'm literally minutes away from placing my GP2X order when I see something about bricking the GP2X. Specifically, when a new unformatted SD card is placed in. Is this still an issue with newer versions of the system, or will I have to go out and purchase a card reader/writer in addition to everything I'm already getting?

Get a card reader, it's easier and faster to use than the USB connection ...

I wouldn't think of NOT having a card reader in any case. I have had one for a very long time, and use it for everything from the digital cameras we own, PDA's, PSP, GP2X....every memory card device we own. I have one of those Sandisk "15-in-1" readers. Works a treat and wasn;t a wallet breaker at 15 bucks.

I think the autobrick feature was removed in 2.0. Should be OK now.

I think can confirm this. I have a 2.0 unit and have had zero problems with leaving the SD in when I boot up, although I never had any reason to place an unformatted card in the GP2X.

The "autobricking" feture is only apearant in fw x-1.4, fw2.0 wants you to press start+select to confirm upgrade, so there isnt any autobrick anymore.
yay!

Yup, in fw2.0 - you have to confirm that you want to brick your unit ;)

(Well, you have to hold down a few keys to attempt an upgrade rather than it trying to do everything automatically as in previous fw's)
