Hi, I' ve got some EXT connettors and I would like to do a DC adaptor 'cause the standard DC port is very uncomfortable. I think to do it as the USB charger of digital camera or similar.
Is it possible? the wiki EXT page is not very clear...

Wiki EXT PORT

thank you very much

Do you mean you want to power the GP2x though the EXT port, rather then though the side power socket (or using batteries) ?

I'm not sure that's possible, although I have vague memories of someone mentioning it MIGHT be...

/me is off to have a search

Edit: Or someone will be more sure about it and I won't bother... :)

You can back-power the GP2X via the ext port sure, but it's not supported and I wouldn't recommend it, as you are basically back-feeding the system. Shouldn't cause any damage if your careful, but you never know with these korean gadgets...

You can? Scary.... Don't think I'll be trying that any time soon.
Dare I ask, have you tried this? :)

To be safe feed your power to the Battery Terminals, if you want to make it easier wire up a socket to the battery cables, then just take out your batteries and plug into the socket.

As a bonus the power from the battery cables goes into the regulator, meaning that if you are using an unregulated power supply it will be much more stable than using the side.

thank u all for the answers I find this
http://www.gp32x.de/board/index.php?showtopic=27289
but is this powered by the box or it use the standard DC?

From the above topic, first entry:

FAQ

Q1) Do I need a PSU?
A1) Yes you need a 12V DC adaptor to operate USB devices such as HDD, CD-Rom, Flash Disk, Mouse, Keyboard, Lan Adapter. However you don't need a PSU while you use TV-Out, Audio Out and Serial Connection.

Conclusion: this breakout box is NOT intended to power the GP2X via the EXT port.

I asked a similar question some months ago and concluded it would be
safer to avoid this approach since the internal voltage regulator would
see a voltage higher on its output than on its input. That's not the way
they are intended to operate, so you might run into problems.

Making a connection to the battery posts would permit you to move the
DC input away from the side of the unit and could be done with a simple
modification to the battery compartment cover, using a socket mounted
on the cover and two wires leading to the battery posts.

dunno if this is any use to you guys, but when i got my GP2X i noticed the EXT port was the same as the port on my LG phone (i think all LG phones use the same port)... so i took my phones usb data cable and plugged it into my GP2X And it worked!! without batteries...!

the reply earlier put me off using this method but maybe you guys could use this for something?

What a pleasant surprise!

Might have been a BIG load of luck involved.

1. If the pins were wrong you could have fried the gp2x.

2. The USB standard indicates powering from the cable
should be limited to less than 500 milliamps current.
The gp2x has been reported to consume between
500 and 800 milliamps.

Do you have a part number for the LG cable. I might
like to try it myself.

This is true, I've tried it with my adapter myself and have been using it constantly for long periods of time, it seems to work fine.

Can you get these sort of cables with a built in regulator if so then that would make sense then shouldn't it? I think you can already get some cables with it because when I checked ebay there appeared to be the VX6000 data cable and it had some sort of mini brick inbetween the cable which I assume is a regulator.

"crusty" it was a data cable that i got with an LG U8138 phone.... plugged it in the GP2X and ta-daa it worked, any ideas how this worked

One thing, the unit wont switch off you have to remove the cable.

im not gonna even try using the power supply for the phone even though some people say it works

This is a data cable for the phone. It seems to have a male connector forgive my ignorance, but could you not get a male to femail USB adapter plug and change the gender, so you could plug in USB devices?
