I owned a gp32, I remember the day It arrived and I had the blu up and running in 5 mins max (no probs),
However I have a feeling the gp2x is not going to be as simple as that. Mainly due to firmware issues etc

I will tell you my fears and maybe you can confirm what I should do before my gp2x arrives sometime this week (from lik-sang da import/export shop)

ok

I have brought a SDcard from www.mousetohouse.co.uk (there cheap, quick and free delivery no matter what you spend) 1gb and have no card reader. I will be relyling on the old usb 2.00 ports and maybe the gp2x firmware to do a format for me. Am I right in thinking thats possible ??

Also Ive heard many SD cards dont work, My SD card is made by a company called mem corp 40x (6mb sec write speed) is this ok

what firmware can I expect, is it easy to update ?? (you dont have to go into much detail, I realise there newbie material for this !!)

is windows 2000 ok ?? (I pray to god it is) - I have to do more research before I get my credit card out in future

How long did it take you guys befor you were playing emus, enjoying all it had to offer ??

If theres anything you think Ive left out which is sound advise pls let me know

Looking forward to rejoining the community

Oh by the way I probably will change my user name (start a new account maybe). I just made this one for fun after being banned for 3 years unjustley (I quit the scene and the gp32 shortly after stateing I may be back if the gp2x sounds interesting, pls dont ask my original user name, I dont want to be banned again) besides that ban runs out april 2007 (oh how Im counting the days - not)

If you've just ordered then it'll most likely come with 1.4 firmware, which works fine for me (just got mine yesterday). However, I'd recommend buying an SD Card reader (they're only a few quid) as 1. It's easier. 2. It doesn't use your battery and 3. I couldn't work out how to use the USB option on the GP2X (I looked at it, gave up and connected the card via my flatmates digital camera instead).

Personally, I wouldn't flash the firmware unless the files etc were added through an SD Card reader. You'd also be risking bricking it the day you get it, it's probably more advisable to wait until you're more comfortable with the system before touching the firmware.

Apart from that, it really is an amazing system. I had the GP32 FLU before and thought it was pretty cool, the GP2X blows it out of the water. It can actually run SNES games at an acceptable speed (although still issues with speeding up/slowing down audio). The Megadrive emulator is fantastic (as it was on the GP32) and the ability to use SD cards and thus watch decent quality films is great. The picture viewer is also fantastic and the screen is simply the dogs danglies! I'm just concerned about bricking the thing so always stick the SD card in AFTER it's booted (prob not the best plan, but I feel safer that way).

I'm new here, and just recieved my GP2X Yesterday. I did not come from the GP32 scene but I do come from a technical background so the device was easy to get in grips with.

a] I used the built in USB on the GP2X to transfer files right out of the box. I had to load up usbmon.exe as per the gp2x.com forums, and it detected it immidiately.

b] I purchased a 1GB Trancend SD Card (50x) for $19.99US and it worked perfectly. I did format it to FAT32 via a cardreader first, just to make sure.

c] The Firmware update scared me to death. The 2.0 firmware updates weird, and I had thought I bricked my unit. It was an easy fast upgrade once I actualy read up on what I was doing. You turn on the GP2X with the SD card / new firmware. It will patch the kernel and get stuck on the green loading screen. After 10 seconds turn off the unit, turn it on and hold SELECT + START. This stared the second part of the process. I used brand new batteries and it took say 6-7 minutes. It did not drain my batteries barely at all however. I would still suggest using the powersupply unit.

d] Win2k is fine

e] I was gaming Genesis in about 5 minutes, and had everything I wanted in about 20 minutes ( had to download stuff ). The GP2X File Archive is excelent.

f] Don't spend too much time gaming and not enough time working ^.~

I also look forward to joining the GP2X community. Now that I updated my unit and did not brick it, I can now comfortably get started with my GP2X =)

For me updating the firmware was easy.

is windows 2000 ok ?? (I pray to god it is) - I have to do more research before I get my credit card out in future

Yes

How long did it take you guys befor you were playing emus, enjoying all it had to offer ??

It took me the 45 second (now 8) boot time to enjoy it. Every thing just worked for me

I would say that the 2X is easier than the GP32. For the mos part there is not nearly as much faffing around with files in certain folders etc. If you have a card reader (much recommended) it just reads as a drive on your machine, its drag and drop and off you go. Fimware flashing is always a nailbiter but as long as you have mains or fresh batteries and you follow the instructions you should be fine.

If you have firmware 2.0 on your gp2x, you can use it as a cardreader. If not however, the usb connection may not work.

ALL SD cards work fine with the gp2x, but some won´t let you upgrade the firmare. Since you have a noname card, i´m not able to tell you if yours will work, but if you want to make sure it works, buy a small Kingston card, those are uprgrade- compatible.
