GpOgg 0.2 released!

Just tested it, audio quality is perfect. MP3 really does suck.

All it needs now is extra features to turn it into a full on media player =)

Hahah, sweet. I will try it as soon as i get off of school. (im on my lunch break right now) You dont know how long ive been waiting for a decent ogg player.

Vorbis owns

Any program that can convert to OGG directly from mp3? OGGdrop does not seem to do this, but please bear in mind that I am only just looking into this now...
Think this would be cool on my Gp32 since the program runs at only 66 mhz (is bound to give longer some battery-life)

Don't forget that if you convert from any lossy format to another then you are going to lose quality. You will get better results if you convert from the original cd again (you do have all your songs on original cd's, don't you? ;))

Thanx a lot... That worked!

In fact most of my mp3 ARE legal, since it is legal to get mp3's from cd's borrowed at the library in my country :)... This is infact because mp3 is considered a lossy format...
However the current goverment is looking into changing the laws in this area.

OGG is a music-format similar to mp3, except that it is and always will bee completly free... Why mp3 is not considered free is a bit more complicated.
As an example: Developers using the mp3 in their production is infact entitled to pay...
I think thats how it is, but there is a more in-depht explaination found at www.vorbis.com

Oggs are also really small, about half the size of an mp3 for same quality.

Mp3 to all converter converts with no loss of quality, it makes perfect copies. But I only use mp3s at 160kbs or higher unless im burning an mp3 cd for my discman.

So I could use a converter to convert all my mp3s to OGG format, and they would have the same quality but would be half the size!? Where can I get a converter?

It's not that easy. Although on slashdot there was a comparison between Vorbis (OGG is a container format, like AVI or MOV), MP3, and AAC when the Apple store came out - AAC and Vorbis bested MP3 easily, IIRC. Especially the higher frequencies were conserved better. Vorbis did loose to AAC by a small margin, though. -> IIRC! <-

The thing is, a proper encoded OGG Vorbis sounds better than an MP3 at the same bitrate - up to the point that you can decrease the bitrate of the Vorbis file by about half while still sounding the same as the MP3 file. This is individual to every song, though. You can get a decent gain from reencoding your stuffs, but don't expect it to be 50%... OGG Vorbis is not the holy grail .... Although it's close...

I still don't get it why they chose to have the OGG directory reside in gp:/ instead of gp:/GPMM/ - this is where I keep my MODs, my roms, my MIDI's, etc... it's non-standard. Although it contrasts quite nicely with the MP3 folder. :)

Not really, when I record off of cd to ogg at 130kbs, it blows mp3 away in every way. But I tried 60kbs with gpogg and it still sounds damn good, a little less quality than a 128kbs mp3. Its very easy to convert to ogg, just as easy as mp3.
