Audio Out Of Sync In Video

I just tried to play some divx videos on my gp2x and the audio on all of them goes out of sync with the video. I thought it was the video but they play fine on my computer. I'm running firmware 1.4. Anyone have any ideas how to fix it? Or am I going to have to wait for the next firmware update?

I have firmware 1.4 as well, and the video/audio sync seems fine. However, when I had firmware 1.21 there was definitely a problem in the video/audio sync.... Are you sure you upgraded your firmware properly?

If you did, I don't think there is any solution except to wait for the new firmware.

Out of interest, tell us about the videos themselves. Did you make them yourself? What size are they? By size, I mean pixels eg 320x240. And at what bitrate are they encoded?

And if all that is too technical, just pick an example file that's losing sync and tell us 1) how long the movie is supposed to be and 2) what the filesize is.

The reason for all the above is, the playback requirements for the GP2x are quite low - meaning that the video can be really poo quality for laptop, but still look fab on the GP2x. Now, while the GP2x can playback hires files, doing so makes it work a lot harder than it needs to - which can cause it to lose sync and/or eat your batteries whole.

Here is the video information:
Audio:
Format: MPEG Layer-3
Sample Rate: 48kHz

Video:
Size: 512x384
Frame rate: 23.976
Sample Size: 24bit
Compression: Divx YV12

The movie 50:25 Minutes and is 358MB

Thanks

While the GP2x is capable of playing that video, it's way overkill for a portable device. I suggest you transcode it down - resize it to 320x240, and use a DivX profile that's suited to a portable device. You shouldn't need to use more than 150-200kbps to get a good result.

A knock-on effect of this is that the final filesize should be around 80-100mb for a movie of that length, so you can fit that many more on your SD card.

Try it as an experiment - transcode one of your movies with the settings I described above, and see if you still have sync problems.

I transcoded the file to 320x240, the file is a bit smaller but i'm still experiencing the same problem.

I bought a gp2x just to avoid re-encoding. It worked fine. It is capable of scaling down all my files in hardware...

But since my update to 1.4 I sometimes have video that is a little out of sync with the audio ....

Not with all files but I also noticed this effect
