Virtual Keyboard

Hi all,

I don't have a GP2X yet, since my focus is trying to graduate, although I've picked up a 2GB and a 512MB Sandisk card and card reader in anticipation.

While browsing the file areas, I've been reading references to a "virtual keyboard". Does the GP2X have a touch-screen keyboard, like those popular on printers LCD displays and LCD kiosks? If so, is this a global feature? That is, does popping up the virtual keyboard take priority over other running tasks? It would be neat if the GP2X could function as a tablet or palmtop (with support for a stylus).

Thanks,

vaustein

Short Answer: No.

Longer Answer:
The context of the virtual keyboard is application specific. e.g. in UAE2All, you press R to open the Vkeybaord, choose a key, then press L when you are finished needing the keyboard.

The GP2X doesn't have a touch screen facility.

Some programs implement a virtual keyboard, some don't, so no, it's not a global feature. If you're interested in palmtop computing in the sense of PDA-style utility, you should follow the threads on Qtopia, which it's possible to run on the GP2X now. That, I believe, has a global virtual keyboard for apps that run within its framework.

The most obvious thing that the GP2X doesn't have that is useful for PDA apps is a battery-backed clock. Thus, unless you're always in wireless range and have added a wifi dongle to the EXT port (which is still non-trivial and not exactly cheap) in order to ntp the time on startup, you're screwed. There is no touchscreen... you have a joystick and eleven or so buttons to input things.

You could always get a Zodiac :)

If you want a PDA, buy a PDA (or a smartphone... my Vario has almost completely replaced my Palm Tungsten C for day-to-day contacts, appointments and surfing).

For me, convergence ends here. Smartphone and GP2X (or other handheld gaming console). Oh, and :p
