Would it be possible for someone to set up the GP2X so that if you plug in a portable keyboard you could use something like Open Office as a word processor for your GP2X? That'd be great for those of us who don't have the money to buy a laptop, but would still like to be able to write papers on the go. Is it possible?

2 things:

Java + GP2X = no (for now)

GP2X + Keyboard = no (for now)

Both of those have to happen first... besides, it wouldn't be very usable (but Impress might be badass with TV-out!)

Well, I don't think OOo could run on the GP2x (processor power, ram, x server...), but you don't need java to run OOo, it is needed just for some not basic tasks.

Daft question, but why Openoffice? if you're writing text, surely you'd only need a basic text editor, which would be much easier to port, and much quicker to use with the 2x.

USB keyboard should be doable soon with some of the fancy stuff coming out of #gp2xdev

OpenOffice is the full package. Granted, its a much bigger project and editor than we need, but say this happens:

You're outside the meeting, 5 minutes before your presentation is due. You check your briefcase, and GASP, your pen drive is gone! You must've left it in your luxury BMW convertible! And you took the train! Luckily for you, you have your GP2X, complete with the comprehensive office package openoffice.org and TV-OUT, you can bash up a presentation with all sorts of flashy spinny text and poorly drawn cliparts in a matter of minutes! The day it save!

I actually think its a neat idea.

First of all, how do you figure you're going to get around to doing _ANYTHING_ in some office application without a keyboard and mouse? Granted the joystick could be used as the mouse, but you need a keyboard.

Second, OOo takes a minute to load on my computer. A minute. Sixty seconds. That's on a 750mHz p3 with 192mb of ram. Pretty old, but it still kicks the 2x's arse in terms of speed. It would take five minutes just to load the bloody application!

OOo is a ridiculous idea; I think it is the product of some peoples' imaginations getting too giddy over linux and open source. Even office applications in general are a bit of a lark. It's an awful idea and likely won't ever happen.

That's what they said about reality TV...

... and Anime being brought to the States...
And if Survivor and fat anime dorks are any indication, they were both awful ideas that shouldn't have happened.

Hm... hadn't realized open office was so intensive. Any text editor will do though!

Remember, it's originally written by Sun.

It's Sun. "We overengineer a solution to a nonexistent problem and pass the savings on to an object which doesn't handle savings and throws an exception."

Well, not quite. It's based on StarOffice, which was made by a company which was bought by Sun so they could get into the desktop suite market.

Older versions of StarOffice are notable for being so bloated that they actually had their own desktop. OpenOffice.org is a fairly decent app, but it's come a long way from where it was. I used StarOffice in the 5.x days and it was a huge piece of garbage. But then, if you weren't on Windows or Mac, you didn't really have a choice in those days.

For sure, OOorg is too big, but as said before, a fancy text editor with basic functionality including formatting and spellcheck should be possible.
