Avtar Settings!!

As near as I can tell it's not policy -- there's just a problem on the website hosting your avatar.

If I go to your avatar's URL I'm redirected to the gp32x.de frontpage. Now since the gp32x frontpage isn't an image, nothing shows up.

I just noticed that.. Many peoples' avatars are gone.. I thought my Firefox was f-ing up... We'll see if mine still shows up after I post this. I used imageshack.us. Sometimes I use photobucket.com... I never use the actual forums to host my avatars because my avatars seem to have a larger filesize than they allow, plus it's not really safe because of stuff like this.

Use picpile, it owns photobucket as you get unlimited bandwidth/pics/space for FREE!!! :p plus it goes up to 1024kb for file size.

Gee, it looks as though the site that hosts the uploaded avatars went down or something. Mine was just a really simple music note, so it's not a rule or anything.

So anyway, gp32.emu.pl's dns went bonkers or something.
If you go to the URL that your avatar is uploaded to, but change gp32.emu.pl to www.gp32x.de, the image loads, so it's just a dns problem or something weird.

I get this from gp32.emu.pl:

Code:
HTTP/1.1 301 Moved Permanently
Date: Mon, 23 Jan 2006 09:22:04 GMT
Server: Apache/1.3.34 (Unix) mod_throttle/3.1.2 mod_auth_passthrough/1.8 mod_log
_bytes/1.2 mod_bwlimited/1.4 PHP/4.4.1 FrontPage/5.0.2.2635 mod_ssl/2.8.25 OpenS
SL/0.9.7a
Location: http://www.gp32x.de
Transfer-Encoding: chunked
Content-Type: text/html; charset=iso-8859-1

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//IETF//DTD HTML 2.0//EN">
<HTML><HEAD>
<TITLE>301 Moved Permanently</TITLE>
</HEAD><BODY>
<H1>Moved Permanently</H1>
The document has moved <A HREF="http://www.gp32x.de">here</A>.<P>
</BODY></HTML>

Meaning: This is not by accident. It is intended that gp32.emu.pl from now on and for all eternity shall be replaced by gp32x.de.

So your best bet is to re-upload or reset your avatar... I don't think this will be fixed. There's a slight chance you can go bother an admin to tweak their Apache configuration, to redirect to the correct gp32x.de URL instead of only the front page, but I wouldn't know who you should be talking to.

Yes, it seems to be the case. For now, you should probably use a third-party image hosting site such as Imageshack.us to host your avatar, then use the 'direct link' URL it provides you into the 'Enter a URL to an online avatar image' box.

Re-uploading doesn't seem to work, as it still links to it through the gp32.emu.pl address.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Hmm...

*ponders on casting Tintin back into the abyss*

It's not just Avatars though... seemed to me last night that lots of user images went missing- like DaveC's sig pic (of his joystick mod)

*Realises he's probably going to get everyone confused in the event of mass avatar migration*

Now that's more like it!

Edit: It's really odd seeing Jim there instead of Stalin. Old Joe and I had been through a lot together.

It's also odd how I dont recognise some peoples names now they have changed their image. Indeed not having old Bill Murray around threw me as to the guys name. Image association etc.

I wonder if it will induce more changes. It's going to throw me a bit. I know some people change regularly, but I use it as a way of identifying posts quickly etc.

Weird.

"We don't have the power captain!!" :D

Yeah I recognise people from their avatar even before I see their name.
