My Glass Screen Mod

Here is a picture that shows my glass mod. The pic was made to show my first joystick mod but if you look at the screen it is glass with the black mask behind it too :)
your cap seems different to the one in your sig, which one do i have on order? or are my eyes knackered (which they probably are)

As my post says it was my *first* mod so the one in the sig are the ones sent out.
thanks for the reply, they both look cool.

Hmm.. not bad. The screen protector I got with my gp2x is like indestructable though.

I have even tried to scratch the actual surface with my nail and it didnt work -.- My gp2x looks brand new still. Plus I like how there is the black border around it.

Lucky... <_<

Mine got practically ruined the first time I ever put it in my pocket.

Presumably you did remove the screen protector that's almost invisible on the outside of the screen, didn't you? That, I found, scratches very very easily - but once off, the screen seems fairly resilient to scratches (although it still gets fingerprintey very easily and reflects oddly when outside).

You beat me to it.

What you need to do is take your old glass screen thing and just 'scratch' around the corners and you will find that there was a thin layer of plastic covering the screen. This layer of plastic was meant to protect your screen during shipping and manufacturing. Just remove it and your screen will be as good as new.

OF COURSE I REMOVED THE FLIPPIN' PROTECTIVE COATING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dang, man, don't take me for an idiot.

If it put it into my pocket good, and take it out ruined, don't you think this was NOT a pre-existing condition? It's scrathes. Very light scratches, but there are TONS of them and while it does look PERFECT in the dark, I cannot play it under a light source at all.

Hence the need for a new screen cover.

EDIT: Oh, wait, now I get what you're saying. But still, I most definately removed it, I've been a member longer than a lot of people here, and I saw when all this stuff about 2 layers on the screen cover popped up the first time.

Oh. My. God.

I thought, did I actually do that? So I started scratching around the sides and uh yeah, it was still on it.

Thanks dude! My screen is beautiful again! (I was wondering why it scratched so easily, like with my nail!)

You wouldn't happen to be selling any glass protectors, DaveC? It would sure be nice. I could probably buy a new cap too. It never was really that much of a bother before, but after playing earthbound for 20mins, that was the worst experience I ever had with that joystick cap.

No I wasn't thinking of selling the screen covers. It is a real pain in the ass to put the black border on and have it look good.

to me the plasic one seems to be pretty sturdy, at least compared to the gp32 one. The only annoyance about it are the fingerprints.

I could probably sell them, once I get the right spraypaint to paint the borders on (glass doesn't take to spraypaint too well) and get a good method of painting them to the right measurements, and get better at cutting glass (it may not look like it in my picture, but due to some filing I has to attempt there are a lot of chips out of the glass along the edges).

For Phil and anyone else who may have overlooked it, as well as on the main screen, there's a very thin film of plastic covering the place beneath the screen that contains the power and battery lights.

I nearly didnt realise, I just thought I had some flaky paint or something but it turns out it was just air trapped underneath the plastic covering :D

Hope this helps :)

This sounds really interesting. I just recently ordered a replacement "screen protector" from gp32z.com. Unfortunately, instead of a protective screen, I recieved a small piece of film, not too unlike the one I had to peel off the screen when I first bought it, the only difference is that it doesn't seem to fit anywhere.

So, for 5.99 and $10+ shipping for some piece of crap, I feel very ripped off. I am not sure if I was sent the wrong part by mistake, but I cannot really do anything with this film, or get ahold of the seller by email.

My whole point in buying a new one is because I accidentally cracked the screen protector that came with the gp2x.
If I understand you correctly, there is no mistake. The screen protector is a thin sheet of plastic with a sticky side that you apply to your screen (well, actually the plastic screen cover) to prevent the actual screen cover from getting scratched. I ordered one with my gp2x and am very happy with it. You just misunderstood what it was that they were selling. I bought my gp2x, a screen protector for it, and my gp32's glass screen from them and they are a great company.

I think that people confuse the screen protector and screen cover..... really, I don't think anyone is right because I don't think there is any "official" term for them, and they both protect the screen. I have decided to call the thick plastic cover the screen cover and the thin plastic cover (to prevent scratches) the screen protector.

Sorry you misunderstood, but they didn't send you the wrong product or rip you off, you got what you paid for.

I still say I got ripped off. According to you, I purchased a screen protector protector. The item I purchased simply said screen protector.

The LCD screen is the screen, and the plastic screen protector is the screen protector. Am I wrong?

and they both protect the screen

How does a thin sheet of plastic that you apply to the screen protector protect the screen?

And besides, as I said before, it doesn't even match the gp2x screen protector I have. The protector is smaller than the screen protector, but larger than the part of it that goes out to the black part.

GP32z did not rip you off, neither did they err in naming the product. Check PlayAsia's website, they are selling the same thing and also call it "screen protector".

Also, the bit of plastic covering the LCD, I do technically think of as a 'screen' in the same sense as a window screen. The 'screen protector' is simply a means of preventing the 'screen' from getting scratched, not a means of providing cover for the LCD.

Okay, w/e. So you consider the screen protector to be a screen and the screen protector protector to be a screen protector.

Using that same 'logic', where can I go and purchase another 'screen'? I mean we can debate whether or not the screen protector protector is a screen protector, or w/e, for a week, but that doesn't change the fact that I need a replacement for my cracked 'screen'.

The question I would ask: Are you looking for a 'plastic screen' or a 'glass screen'?

I could cut a simple glass screen for you if you wanted one. It would just take a little wait until I could get a bigger piece of glass to practice on before I made one for someone else (I think I may have some pieces out of picture frames, somewhere), or if you wanted the border painted on, it would take a little more wait until I could get the proper paint. Or you could get a picture framing shop to cut one for you.

I don't think any online stores offer replacement "screens" (screen covers if you use my terms). They probably will in the future, but how far off that is, I'm not sure. The best solution would be to get a nice glass screen from davec or jmetal88 (once he fixes up his methods a little), have one cut for you by some glass-cutting place, or simply cut one yourself. If you don't want to mess around with that, try contacting either craigix from gbax/gp2x.co.uk or jr22wiss (or something like that....) from gp32z. They might be able to get you a replacement cover from gph.

Good luck,
-ben
