Gp2x Sales & Peripherals

Craig,

Every time I read a post from you, I can't remark enough about how informative and useful the things you have to say are. It makes me even more glad I ordered my 2x off of you over anyone else. :)

On to what you actually talked about, maybe this will give some of the GPH haters something to chew on.

Allan.

there better not be significant hardware changes, that would totally screw us early adopters.
early adoption is just that - the adoption of an early pre-production version that may well change. there have been no guarantees and for all we know the "second edition" could be unrecognizable from the ones we all have now. I don't realistically expect the Second Edition to have any significant changes, however if it does, you have no moral right to complain about it or make demands.

We are early adopters and as a result we have to be prepared to take the consequences. In other words...if you can't take the heat STAY OUT OF THE KITCHEN until things cool down a bit and stop whining. <_<
Are you ignorant or what? You're obsolutely, TOTALLY, WRONG. First, the preorders units and the units sold now were NEVER sold as "early pre-productions units". GPH never said anything like that. And the only reason the first units were marked as First Edition was that they were meant to be special, a bonus for the preorders.

Second, GPH has stated time and time again that the only thing that will differ from their offical release in Korea is the firmware. The hardware will not change. If you buy it now you'll get the same hardware that they'll sell at "official release" IN KOREA. They're only going to fix the firmware. And in case you still missed it: This official release is now only a official release on the korean market. If you check any official international retailers you will see that there's nothing about preproduction units, or beta, or presell, or preorders or anything. For all intentions and purposes the international official release has already happened.

Now, unless GPH, and their official retailers have specifically stated that they're selling beta units with possible hardware faults they can not ask their customers "to be prepared to take the consequences". Which they HAVE NOT ASKED. They've done the exact opposite. They've told us not to worry. All will be fixed with firmware. And when you make promises like to your customers you better keep them.

And sorry, but, your opinions on early adoption are BS. You don't punish the customers that are willing to support you early on. You reward them. Which GPH has done. End of story.

I was little scared when I started to read this topic and all that words about new hardware-modified edition which should come, because I've ordered my GP2X from playasia 2 days ago. <_<
But as soon as I read this...
There won't be a 'second edition' thats something liksang made up.

I am trying to make them rotate or use a new joystick, that would be the only hardware change.

... I'm calm and hope there will be no problem between my thumb and digital pad. ;)

Rotating it sounds so simple, but would need them to change the board, which I don't think is very likely. I've been looking inside mine wondering if I could rotate it myself. I don't think it's impossible, but it's definitely not something I'm willing to try!

This would normally just be a small ECO and respin, but yep having already released they would have to agree to do a recall of sorts to fix already shipped ones, so I doubt it will happen. Even though I think it *should* happen.

I presume Craig made a slight typo, Dignsys are the firmware guys so I would imagine Designsys = Dignsys :)

The best way of rewarding early customers is to punish the late adopters with a shit contoller, right?
Please don't quote me out of context. I wasn't talking about the joystick issue. AFAIK, no one was. I was responding to a claim that as early adopters we should just shut up and be prepared to take the consequences. That's just BS, and you know it.

And about the joystick issue. I don't think late adopters should be punished any more than the early ones. You may interpret that as you like.

i hope they dont change the joystick or make any changes for at least a year, its selfish i know, but i dont want to know i have an outdated unit i paid £100 odd for and will be stuck with it

Finally someone says it. It's unbelivable how people react to the mention that the hardware could be improved... You bought the GP2X that you have. It works. Maybe the joystick could be better but it is good enough, it works. So you won't get it replaced, no matter how much you cry. Future units should of course be improved if possible. And of course you won't get those improvements since you bought your unit before they were made. Yes, we are all screwed but not enough to cry about it.

So what is the solution? Keep the dodgy joystick and possibly get crushed by competition so that early adopters don't get their panties in a bunch? I don't think that is a good idea either. Nintendo came out with a true backlit GBA-SP recently. Should all GBA-SP owners with the crappy frontlit screen version get mental about them upgrading the screen? So I guess Nintendo is punishing early adopters of the GBA-SP.

It is all about progress. We had the advantage of not having to wait like the others will. My only concern is that they make all software work on both. If the "new" version has a stick with X,Y bias like it should then great. That is what eBay is for :p

And I'm sure repair/mod services will open up which could replace the old joystick with the new one for a relatively small fee.

They're not doing any hardware modifications other than that they MIGHT replace the cap. That's not a big problem for you, in fact it would benefit you, because replacement caps for the gp32 run about <1USD, and we all want a new cap for the stick anyway. It's not like any hardcore modding has to be done to the unit for a cap replacement.

Edit: I knew this type of freak-out would happen... I'm happy to be recieving my unit in March... I'm not so happy about how Lik-sang has not emailed me about it at all, and basically treated us (their customers) like shit, and acting like the GP2X is a P.O.S. But other than that, I'm happy to be steered clear as far as the worrying goes.
