hey, since i've joined and can access the "newb help" section for the gp2x, i've noticed a few complaints, and people saying things like "gp2x is f****** retarded". although the obvious retort is "you bought a handheld from a korean company which only costs £120 and no one has heard about, what can you expect?" the marketing from GPH suggests things that can't really be done at the moment, like huge battery life.

like what you've done with the ports thing, where a source code is needed and it's there in big letters, perhaps you should do this for the people prospectively buying a gp2x. they should really be warned that the gp2x is pretty buggy, and difficult to use for those who aren't very computer literate.

please don't flame. ^^;;

I'm not a developer but I am comfortable playing around with the GP2X even in its early stage of production. This is half the fun for me.

If I wanted a dumbed down game playing gizmo, I'd have bought one of those other machines from my local retailer.

I don't think the GP2X has been marketed to illiterate people at all. Otherwise it would be on the shelves along with those others.

I just don't understand why people feel they have been ripped off. Most of the software is free and made in the spirit of open source.

Open source is a community effort, and I think that is the whole premise of the GP2X. We can all contribute to making it great.

No of course... we generally don't resort to flaming here. :D

It can not be denied that gp2x is plagued by lots of issues. Most them are minor and can (and probably will) be fixed by software updates. So when things get fixed then gp2x will be in much better shape.

Anyway there isn't other handheld like the gp2x (and there will not be for a long, long time). So... we are very forgiving to the GamePark Holding and all those bugs. This is so because gp2x's pluses are to big to ignore. Really what other portable machine offers such freedom of developing and quite robust techs' specs? Memory capacity (64MB of RAM - biggest of all portable game consoles), video functions (exceeds PSP easily) and general processing power of the gp2x is top notch. It's lacking only hardware 3d acceleration but will be able to do +PSX 3d graphics in software.

About warning about bugs well... There is official "first edition" for a reason.

yeah, having thought about it you guys are right. i guess a warning isn't necessary.. although having read some things, i'll be interested to see how well my GP2x works. the directory tree having to be perfect seems a bit annoying. that said, i am extremely looking forward to recieving mine tomorrow (hopefully).

especially having seen burnout on a friends PSP. firstly it didn't look very fun, and secondly the overall quality was only marginally better than that pocketeers NFS game for the GBA.. i would rather be playing genesis. or mame. ^^

I hate to break it to you, but if having to put the directory tree in the correct order is annoying to you then you may as well not get a GP2X. You WILL have to put files in the correct directory's, read readme's, and maybe even edit a file to two to get the emulators to work.
If these things bother you you should probably get one of the more popular, off the sheld, handheld games.

haha, i know, i know. i've lurked in this forum for quite a while. i was just saying it might put off other people, that would say something to the effect of "ooh pretty psp. it plays movies you say?! NEVER! I MUST HAVE ONE!", rofl.

Thanks for your comment on the Ports Require Source Code :) In the past, I sticked every thread asking for a port with no source and renamed it to some variation of that message. This time I hope my message was clearer from the start ;)

The GP32 had similar problems with people not being able to register or get the Free Launcher, or not knowing where to put their SNES roms... and so on.

It'll peter out and if anything gets widespread befuzzlement, I'll make a sticky.

GP32, even though it got easier towards its later life (i.e., now), it was never 'simple', and anyone wanting a simple games playing machine was best to steer clear. This bears up for the gp2x too, and I for one like it. It give an air of customizability and experimentation to the whole thing, and watching the scene develop is like going back in time 2-3 years and going through the whole gp32 excitement again.

Its great!

yeah, it's pretty amazing for someone like me (new to this sort of scene) to see a problem arise (such as the joystick) and then everyone pitch in, suggesting remedies, providing schematics, even ordering a copy to take it apart for everyone.

i guess you wouldn't get this with a commercial console's fanbase.. although i'm starting to wonder who is the more talented, GPH or the hardware guys here xD

I wouldn't call GPH talented at all. OK, it was a great idea to bring out a handheld which focuses on homebrew. But they didn't do a really good job and because of that the GP2X users are tormented with all these annoying problems. But the users didn't let that bother them and there have been numerous hardware and software fixes posted on this forum. So I would definetly call de users of this forum resourceful and talented

This company did one thing right really well - the concept of gp2x is fantastic one!

The rest is... is a mixed bag.

Both size and look of gp2x is alright. The choice running generic AA batteries was good one as they are cheap and I can have many sets of them. This wouldn't be so easy with custom made battery.

The size of lcd screen is great and resolution is exactly what it should be (320x240).

The gp2x's chipset has many great features (various coprocessors) and software what we have now is just using some of its capabilities. This is making future very promising.

Even 3d games should be very good on this machine. There are quake1 and DukeNukem3d already. Especially the latter is impressive - it runs smoothly at 200MHz and plays excellent.

Gp2x's ext port not only will give TV-out but serial ports and even perhaps USB host too. Think about other uses than just game console or plain media player...

For issues... I still have some... but less than at beginning.

The gp2x is something special indeed. I hope the remaining issues will be solved. This handheld deserves much more credit but unless most of problems get fixed its appeal will be limited.

It's a pity that GPH didn't manage to get everything ok from the start.

Indeed, 8000 has been sold, and if they're going to do any hardware fixes later, people that already got it might get anoyed.

i know i will be. >:0 but i don't know what there is to fix really.. although the sound is horribly distorted on mine (until i start a film, strangely), and perhaps rotating the joystick 45 degrees.

even then, there will probably be some devs offering to perform hardware "fixes" at a knockdown price, if GPH decide to alter the unit. ;)
