i was using my gp2x this morning with my mmc card, then i decided to put my SD card in and try it, its now bricked and coloured lines come up all over the screen. Is there anything i can do? (it came up with the random "Updating Firmware" screen)

Did you have the kernal image on the sd card. And also but i am sure you are aware but the batteries. The GP2x Does give any warning with batteries you just get the screen with lines and stuff hope it isnt bricked

If you got the "Updating firmware" screen and you didn't have a firmware update on your card, then your 2x has just updated itself with empty data, so you'll need to try DJW's unbricking guide, and if that fails, possibly sent it to him hoping he can debrickify it?

O man that sucks. Mine's just fine, well the usb cable doesn't work on any computer I've tried, so until I get a card/card writer I got to wait some more.

I would say it's the batterries but I dunno, I have 2500mAH's so

thanks for your replies, this is especially annoying as it was my christmas present and i now have absolutely nothing to use / play with. they are brand new 2500s are were working great so im sure that it isnt them. this has seriously ruined my christmas :( i didnt think it would happen to me.

Make that 4 bricks :(

played with it most of the evening, SD card corrupted itself somehow. plugged it into SD reader, formatted, copied SNES emu and MAME onto the card + a few hundred roms...

Switch gp2x on... Updating Firmware...

:(

I am getting coloured lines intermittently with my unit, even on full batteries. Seems random... changing to another set of batteries seems to cure it. I managed to update my firmware ok (after a few sweats over dud batts) but I intend to buy a psu asap.

Anyone getting the coloured lines, I would advise using other batteries... even if you think yours are "full".

mine definitly are, and ive tryed 6 diffeeent types. I had my new ones on charge for 4 days and they were perfect. Then when putting my new SD in the fucking firmware updating appeared :(

Just ordered my gp2x and worried now...

Can someone please explain the reason why this message ....updating firmware ... appears ? (resulting in a bricked unit)

Is it a random event ?
Is it when using a wrong formatted sd-card ?
Is it when inserting a blank sd card ?
Is it something that happens when actualy trying to update the firmware...

In other words what are the pitfalls when you receive a fresh unit ????

well, the unit seemed fine (although i did a crp job puttig on he screen protector) i belive it was just because my blank SD may of been formatted wrong, but we'll never know =C

I seem to have the coloured lines when switching the unit on. Then some times the unit will not load. But all appears to be Ok. Apart from the unit not reading my 1gb sd card.

Guys another thing to try is this...

after getting the coloured lines with fully charged 2100 NiMh batteries, I thought something was dodgy. Opening the battery cover and rolling the batteries slightly, made the unit boot. It would seem that the battery holders, or the battery terminals are coated in a very fine residue / film. Try roughing them slightly with sandpaper or a blade of sorts, just to remove anything that might cause a poor contact. Usual disclaimer...

I am not responsible for your actions should you damage anything.

Yeah, but did you ever get the 'firmware updating' screen when it should not have happened?

Everyone (like myself), who has had this happened, has had no way to fix it.
