Dc Adaptor Requirements?

What type of power adaptor do I need to run the GP2X? I have a RadioShack muilti volt(3-12) and 1000mA. When I do use it the GP2X doesn't boot right. It shows a bunch of muilti colored vertical lines like when I try to play a video when the batteries are almost dead.

i'd also like to know, i dont wanna blow it up using a non-standard AC adaptor which would otherwise work with some other thing but the 2X is just complicated and decides it doesnt like things like batteries

Well it booted fine after I unpluged it and put the batteries back in. Also it soesn't do anything it the inner pin is set wrong.

Regulated power supply, the idea is that there is a chip in the power supply that keeps the power in the correct voltage.

The one you got most likely has just a coil and a capacitor, no regulation going on.

That means it might start out at 4.3volts and under load drop to 3 or 2.9 or something.

The GP2X is a computer, you wouldn't use a cheapo 250w power supply in an nForce4 SLi computer with dual 6800Gt's and a couple of dvd burners, it would work (or not work) exactly the same way as your GP2X is doing now.

A good thing to look for is the words regulated somewhere on the package.

and it will probably cost $30 to $40 instead of $15 to $25.

I looked at radio shack's assortment looking for a DC adapter. Their 3-12V (1000mA included) doesn't have a 3.3V setting, only like 3V and 5V i think or something.. The GP2X needs 3.3V~

You'll be very lucky to find a power supply that actually states (and delivers) exactly 3.3V - most power supplies are simply not accurate enough.

Eg. I spent £20 on my power supply which has always powered my GP32 (and various other stuff) perfectly. It also powers my 2X with no problems. However, without load, it delivers 3.77V as default, and 3.2V under load. Now, that only has a switch for 3V, 4.5V, 9V & 12V.

A 3.3V is likely to be very similar - the only accurate 3.3V power supply I have cost £80, and takes up a large proportion of the desk (about the size of a miniature desktop PC).

FYI, I'm using a power adaptor from radio shack, 3-12V, 800mA. I'm using the 3V setting and the boot completes as long as I don't have an SD card inserted when it boots.

I also found that turning the unit off then on immediately shows the colored lines others are seeing. Waiting 30 seconds or so to turn the machine back on allows the boot process to work again.

I'm not sure if the problem comes from using 3V instead of 3.3V, or if 800mA is too much as the wiki suggests.

Yeah, im probably going to wait for gp32z to get the official cables, thats the only thing that i can think of between me and writing the check hehe.

Egads, that doesn't look like an l shaped connector! is it?

800mA is only what your adaptor can provide, the 2X will only draw as much as needed regardless. So, if your adaptor is too *low*, then it could cause problems, but being too high shouldn't make a difference.

For reference, my adaptor is 1200mA.

If I turn the 2X on and off quickly then I do get the colored lines, but I just assume this is because the 2X doesn't have a proper reset circuit, so you need to properly let it all power down first before switching it back on. I just leave it 5 seconds between the off and on and it's fine.

I picked up THIS ONE with my gpx2 and it works great. Had to mod the plug though.

By 'mod the plug' do you mean anything more complicated than using one of those travel adaptors? (The sort of thing that lets you use UK hairdryers in mainland Europe - they often get sold at airports)

I got the Radio Shack 3V 700mA Power Adapter Part# 273-1756 with Adaptaplug "A" Part#273-1704.

The plug fits perfectly but I think the Adapter needs more amperage. When I boot, I get a white screen with verticle colored lines. Works great on battery.

I'll exchange tomorrow for a higher rated one.

Call me crazy but I went for the 2000mA one at radio shack. I brought my unit it (bricked and all) and when I tried the 1000mA adaptor the colored lines would not show up like the should and the screen would shutter and do a bunch of crazy stuff.

I tried the 2000mA one and it showed the lines perfect. While the unit is probally drawing some sort of insain amount of power being that it is bricked, I know this one should work.

Plus it works great with my digital camera so, win-win.

I got the 800mA one from Radio Shack and it works fine at the 3 volt setting.

FYI: I just received this message from David at GP32z if anyone is interested:

I have been trying out a 3rd party adaptor over the last few days with a view to making some available for sale within the next week or so. If you are interested drop me an email and I'll let you have more information / prices as soon as they are available.
