How Is The Gp2x Functionality Now?

Hi Guys,
I cancelled my gp2x order early November to lots of underlying issues. But what I was wondering is how is the system functionality since the last firmware release. I wanted to wait for a more stable system before I re-purchased it. Is the movie player now playing MPEG's? Does the SNES emulator work with sound, etc.

Sorry I know most of you know all this, but I have been off the forum since I cancelled my order. Just want to know if it's now fairly safe to order!?

Thanks All!

Let me tell you that if you ram a dvd in the SD slot it now plays!

No seriously there will be a major big firmware update very soon. I have one i ordered recently and never had any movie player problems and not yet tested MPG's.

The SNES Emulator ist no GPH Project, it was done by NK. It has Sound in slow NON-ARM Core. The much faster ARM Core from osnesx9xgp doesn't have sound yet. Up to now the best emulated systems I use are: Sega Genesis/Megadrive, C64 and NeoGeo CD.

P.S. Why did you cancel?!? To wait for a more stable GP2X? If you would have waited and added the FW Update from the past and future, you would have the same Handheld you will get with your next order. The Harware is final already and it ROCKS. I just LOVE my GP2X.

EDIT: Sorry double Post. I know... I thought my first Post wasnt sent.

I was mostly worried about the joystick, lcd, headphone, and speaker (stereo) issues. I am a software dev. so I don't mind software issues. But I don't want to mod a new system.

The Speaker (stereo) issue is a Software problem. In the File Archive you can find a Script to fix this problem. The LCD Problem is part Software part Hardware, but those with Hardware probs will be replaced. The same for headphone problems. The Joystick is a pure Software problem. Try Frodo C64 Emulator for GP2X. Joystick works great in it.

You are talking about data transfer between PC and GP2X? Thats a SERIOUS Software bug. It only works on FAT32 Cards and sometimes it won't be detected by PC. Try a Card Reader. It's faster, too. BTW It seems like GPH added USB Host Support on EXT Port, if you are interested it this feature. Check the Wiki. http://wiki.gp2x.org/wiki/EXT_Port

nice, thanks for the reply. I will probably order after the next firmware release. Then I can be guranteed that my GP2x will read my sd card; well at least have the latest firmware.

Do that. You will like it. Especially when Apps start to use both CPUs. Squidge and ryleh already have proven that it works. Perhaps you'll get a second edition GP2X, but it should be the same like my one.

This is not true. Joystick issues are definitely hardware. Mostly slight alignment issues that make it catch on the casing. All faily easily fixed (ish).

Should think not. Direction in digital controller is simply on or off. Dead zone is the zone, where the stick does not press on any switch. Software cannot move those switches closer.

Not untill we invent nanobots, of course.

Megadrive and PC Engine as well as C64 are working pretty well. Snes, yes but without sound, with sound = almost unplayable right now. NES somewhat works. Neo Geo CD works pretty well and with BGM @280mhz at near fullspeed. without you get fullspeed @ 266mhz or less, depends on the game, almost perfect emulation with games that are working(80% of all games I guess). Gameboy(Color) is working great but with minor sound issues and only in the native incredible TINY resolution, you can currently also only pick ONE game since it has no rom selector yet, same goes for the GameGear/Master System Emulator.

Just because of the the Neo GeoCD, C64 Megadrive and PC Engine Emulator I would say:

ORDER IT RIGHT NOW!

-the graphic novels are also nice btw -And make sure to NOT buy a CN MEMORY SD for the Unit, since it's not working yet.
