Thanks to the beautiful and curvy Sterm, I've managed to do a quick port of of Frotz for the gp2x. (Yes, I have blu-tack on my joystick, what of it?)

I need to figure out how to get it to compile with ncurses support under the arm-linux toolchain, but it's good for starters. I'll upload it to the file archive when I get back from the shops.

(I'll start on NetHack later, too!)

could people post links to FREE games that use this?

Also, How does the command system work? Do you have to type the commands in or do you scroll through them?

Thanks,

You have to scroll through the characters at the bottom with the stick. It's a bit of a ball-ache, but it's better than nothing :)

Congratulations, on making the slowest game genre in existence, even slower. :)

yeah, keyboard support is handy ;)

I've done quite a bit of IF supporrt over the years.. I've done Frotz, Magnetic and Scottfree for Palm OS; using the stylus to tap on words has been extremely useful.

ie: I do auto-mapping as well, but the tap on words is the most important; context sensitive.

So I have lists of useful words like "n" and "u" for instance, and words like "examine" and such. But if you tap on the word "book" it'll offer a menu of "read book" "look at book" "go book" "eat book" that sort of thing. So the tap-on menu is "whole actions" for words, plus some "insert into buffer" actions, while the canned words (like "u") just insert into the buffer mostly..

So "n" just does "n\n", while "go book" would not hit return at the end.. just insert, incase you wanted to further edit it. I also have a quick key for "return" of course :)

So you can play entire zmachine and other adventures in my interps, without writing anythign.. just tap away, with a good scrollback.

Works very well.

So if someone wants to do it here.. context menus with a "click" cursor, and popup words with shoulder buttons and such.. it could work well.

Any way to make interactive fiction more playable on a handheld would be really cool... there are some wonderful text adventures out there that I would barely think of playing on my main PC, but which I'd be quite happy to play on the bus if I felt like something between a game and a book.

Besides, there's only so many games for Scumm :(

Where's the Source Code? Since the Frotz is GPL you have to made it public...

It's already public. I didn't modify the source.

Zork Zork Zork Zork!

Dream. Come. True. Almost.

Yeah, better GP2X support. Current scrolly keyboard thing is bad.

Plus, I think he meant YOUR source. As in, the one you've re-coded to make it run on GP2X.

Well, he said he didn't modify the source, so the fact that it's available elsewhere is enough to satisfy the GPL. All he has to do is provide a link to it.

Oh. I also did a quick port of frotz today. I've uploaded it to the archive.

:)

Ah, I just noticed that they linked to your upload from the front page. It's probably the exact same binary anyway! :)

Yeah, it's a bit confusing, but as you say, the binaries are probably the same. :)
