Deciding Between Psp And Blu

I have quite a dilemma on my hands, I have found a great price for a PSP and a great price for a GP32 BLU but I can't decide which to get! I want a GP32 because it has been out longer and has more emus and original games plus it isn't so mainstream as the PSP, but I want a PSP because apparently they are really awesome for just about everything. The prices that I would buy them for are:

PSP (Value Pack): $185 shipped

GP32 BLU (128 meg card) : $186.95 shipped

Right now I'm leaning towards the PSP but I'm not quite sure yet. Thanks

Retro & Homebrew & Emulation: Buy a GP32.
Commercial Games: Buy a PSP.

I don`t think that you will find a PSP with 1.5fw (capable of running homebrew) for 185 Dollar...

Don`t forget you are going to have to add extra for a decent sized memorystick to the price of the PSP, As it only comes with a 32mb one.

~ £40 for a 512mb card
~£80 for a 1gig card.

I would buy a second user GP off ebay (should be no more than £80 - also in the marketplace DRAK has a decent machine for sale) and then buy a gpx2 when they have been out a few months...

gp32 is a pure emulation machine and as such already has emulation support (and many fine homebrew titles) for most of everything you would want to play up to 16 bit systems... base your choice on what it can do now.

PSP is a little more capable of running 16 bit at the minute (neo geo cd) but its not a pure emulation machine and sony have decided to release automatic firmware upgrades with major games - which can in effect obliterate your emulation... to do emulatiojn you have to buy a machine with the right firmware... you would be gambling on the future developmants at sony.

the psp is awesome, but its a different beast

the GP32 plays straight out of the box!

hope this helps

Ultimately the only thing working against the GP32 is the one thing you like most about it, it's age. It's an old system looking at dwindling days but as the elder system the homebrew you can get for it is better aged.

Thusly there's really no down side to buying it over the PSP unless you really want the games. Right now I have 4 games for my PSP which while I like them all quite a bit it's kinda enimic and sad that I'd have to rely so heavily on Emulators to increase my gaming useage for such a device and fear a new game trying to install the new firmware which would instantly destroy my PSP homebrew games. Also to watch movies is expensive as heck, just to get a 512mb MStick is like $85 before tax, granted you can fit quite a but of NES and Genesis games on the included 32mb stick but you dont have the level of compatability in the emulators so it's not like you're in danger of running out of space and needing one unless you're more interested in movies which is probably the one comparable place where it's far better than the GP32.

So if you want mostly 8 and and some 16 bit games and can do without commercial games aswell as be able to buy cheaper media for storing roms, homebrew, and (lower quality) videos You might as well get the GP32.

On the other hand there's always the 2 month wait for the GPx2 which will likly be the same price or lower, come with emulators and be better with videos than the PSP albeit with a screen closer in size to the GP32.

Is the PSP really that much better than the GP32 for movies?

I encode my highest quality stuff at 17fps and 22Khz Stereo sound and the end result is damn impressive.

Yes - much better. Bigger screen, bigger cards (if you pay).

But, gp32 is still excellent for moves too, just not up to psp level. Should all change with the gpx2 :)

If you want my advice :

The gpx2 should be releaced soon. Its better than the gp32 and its cheaper!!!

I think you should wait till october, and then you can choose between the gpx2 and the psp :D

Yeah I was thinking about the upcoming GPX2, maybe I'll wait for that. But I think I'm getting a deal for the PSP and I don't know when I will find an opportunity like this again. I've heard that the PSP breaks easily, is this true?

Well one thing to consider because of the "underground" nature of the GP32 they are harder to get. The PSP is easy to find so you can get one of those anytime. You may want to grab the BLU now and get a PSP later.

If you go for the PSP make sure you check to see if it has any bad pixels, it is very common for PSPs to have more than one defective pixel and that is maybe why it is so cheap.

That is all speculation.

You have no idea if it will come with emulators, if it does will you have to BUY them? How good will they be ? which ones will it have? I would bet there won't be a MD emu that is as good as DrMD is on the GP32 (DRMD even gives PSP MD emus a run for their money). For almost sure there won't be any Atari 2600, 5200, 400 computer, C64, Lynx, MSX, Coleco emus right away. If anything you will only get a few popular ones right away like NES, GB etc. There are too many unknowns about this GPx2.

If your going for homebrew and emulation then I would definatly say gp32.
With the PSP you're always gonna have to be waiting for that latest firmware hack and all that bullshit. GP32 you'll have no worries about that kind of stuff

I would say wait EITHER WAY. I have heard of many people selling their PSPs because at the moment there weren't enough games for them- and if there were some new ones then they wouldn't be able to run homebrew and emus because of the imbedded firmware updates. So, I would wait because the GPX2 is coming out soon and has many promising areas: Linux, twice the RAM of PSP, etc, etc. Its not going to kill you to wait,I always find that its better to wait in situations like these...unless you're rich .

Do me a favor and read my post before you reply, I said LIKELY I didn't say if definatly would and the things I said were based on the information collected so far. Emulators are being worked on maybe not the ones you want but there will be some and LIKELY the more popular ones, the options on video are far more open than either of the other two systems as the specs plainly list more codecs than both devices COMBINED, I was giving him options to look into so he can make a more informed choice.

...As for the durability of the PSP, it's just as sturdy as any similar device such as a MP3 player, CD player or portable DVD. Treat it as you'd treat those and it should be fine. Dead Pixles can be annoying for some, but if it's just 2 or 3 and they arnt clustered or if they arnt in the midle of the screen then it's hardly worth getting crazy over, they really arnt that much of a problem once you get to playing a game or watching a movie. If they're selling it for 185 then chances it ir probably has a couple.
