i need help! i just bought a gp32 :) with no usb lead  , is there any way i can get it to work or have i wasted my money  ? please help

Get yourself a SMC reader/writer (they are very cheap - approx £10) and you should be fine - they are much faster than using the cable so a lot of people don't use the cable at all.

You need to make sure that you get a writer that is able to format SMCs to FAT8 file format. There is one on this page that works just fine.

First, that's SMC-Reader independent, Second, it's fat16 (or 12 for very small cards).

i already have a smc reader writer, but dont think it formats to fat 12 or whatever  plus in the faq it says you need the cable for registering or something like that? i dont have no instructions or nothing with it?????

Yes, if you are going to buy and download comercial games online I think you might need to register. But otherwise I don´t think you need to register...

The important question is: What firmware do you have? Since you´re new to the scene and probably haven´t flashed your firmware yet, there´s two possibilities:
-Is the Main menu all blue and white and has the menu options "Play" and "PC- Link" ? Then you have the European firmware.
-Is the Main menu yellow, orange and is in the seventies retro style? Has it an inbuilt MP3 Player? Then you have the original 1.5.7 firmware.

If you have the Eurofirmware you don´t need an USB cable IF...
-you have a cardreader
-you don´t want to play commercial games
-you have a (2nd) Pc with Win9x/Me runnig on it, since you sometimes need to format and Win2000/NT can´t format in FAT16.

If you have the original firmware, check out if you have the Freelauncher installed( i assume you bought your gp32_console used with an SMC) If yes, you need to make a backup of it, since it is your only way of running Freeware, and it would be really bad if you lost it by accident.
If not, you need the cable. You have to register to get the Freelauncher. (Hmmm... actually i saw an official gamepark site where you could get the Freelauncher without registration, but i didn´t try it, since my firmware doesn´t need freelauncher).

And formatting can still be quite an issue. Some SMC´s get corrupt sometime, and maybe you want to buy new ones, so there´s a need for formatting.

My suggestion IF you have the Eurofirmware or the original one WITH freelauncher:
-buy a cardreader
-copy the the firmware flashing tool on your SMC (called fw.fxe)
-copy Slubman´s firmware on your SMC ( find it here )
-find a tutorial to flash your fimware and flash it with Slubman´s firmware.

Slubman´s firmware can format a SMC independant from your computer and doesn´t need freelauncher.

i think i have the original 1.5.7 firmware. so how do i see if i have a freelauncher, i dont even know what this is  ! i,m quite baffled, but i really want my gp32_console to work, it sounds like th coolest console ever, i love retro games

Original 1.5.7.... Hum, that´s not good...
Ok,Ok, lets start easy... Was the GP32 you bought supplied along with a Smartmedia card, or have you bought a new one ?
If your Smartmedia card has been supplied along with the gp32_console unit, probably (if the seller isn´t a complete idiot) there´s Freelauncher installed on it. Freelauncher is an application used to launch non-commercial programs (.fxe´s) from the root:\GPMM directory of a Smartmedia card. To find out whether its installed or not, just insert the SMC (that´s how we call Smartmedia cards) into the GP32 slot, switch your unit on and select the menu entry "GAME", then push the "START" button. A new menu opens, in which all commercial programs are listed. The Freelauncher is one of them, if you see it in this menu, you can run it by selecting it and pressing "START".

I knew all this  ! the only thing i didn't know is what the freelauncher was  when i turn it on and go into game it says "SMC is not inserted or no game exists press B to cancel" soi guess there is no freelauncher installed huh? but none of this matters anyway coz i just orderd a 166 blu from gpax.com :D i'll just take the other one back where i got it that'l sort my problems wont it? thanks for all your help :)

You don't need to format SMCs when you get them. I have over 10 SMCs and used all of them right out of the box with no formatting.

You can load many launchers without flashing, just load them like any program. you can then format SMCs that have become corrupt.

Subman's FW don't work with encrypted games so be careful if you get some commercial stuff. I heard that they can be cracked to run but I don't know how to do that.

So the GP32 with no lead was not the one you ordered from GBAX then?
How many GP32s do you need? hehe!!

I'm definitely not going to get mine in time for my birthday :(

I'm really dissapointed considering it was ordered last week and the website says 'In stock' and '24h delivery'...
