Us Psp Launch Details

bast: you are not a compelte fanboy like some of the twats on the nintendo official forums, but u make remarks about how well the psp will do and so on and so forth and do not seem to ever weigh up the otherside of the argument

u seem to splurt your opinions as fact which is what makes you fanboyish

Ah well, I can handle slightly dimmer (I had a fecking atari lynx for crissakes). I just hope the quality of the visuals is the same.

I love this place, on gamefaqs everyone's head is explodeing because the "OH SO EXPENSIVE" value pack is being released in north america and has more in it than the japanese value pack (which is the same price)

"Oh noes! THE SAME PRICE and comes with spiderman 2 and a demo disk? WE'RE GETTING RIPPED OFF!"

I live in the US, my currency is toliet paper, but I can still afford the things I want. :p

That's what I'm saying.... I see it as a pretty damn good deal and would gladly buy 5 if I had need for that many....

Re: the LCD differences, I would say that this link: http://thepsp.blogspot.com/2005/01/sharp-v...lcd-screen.html
provided by Kop 007 with the screenshots is pretty representative of what I saw when comparing my first batch PSP to the ones my friends just bought.

This really sux :(

Matt - As far as me saying what system will sell better, well sorry if my opinion is that PSP will sell more. Why should I not think that? Sony have become, over the last two generations of hardware, what Nintendo once was... they outsell everything and anything else that comes along. Why should that change here? I try to be unbiased.... I buy every f'ing system I can get my hands on, and love them all on their own merits, this includes the PSP and DS. But put them side by side, and while I can imagine a ton of people out there would want both, it's hard for me to imagine anyone who had to choose only one, choosing the DS. UNLESS, of course, they are the type of Nintendo fan described in the above cartoon. Or unless the buyer can't afford or doesn't want to spend the extra $100 for the PSP (probably parents buying for their kids which is going to be a significant portion of DS sales I expect). I can't help but think it will just be a repeat of PS one vs N64, and PS2 vs. GC. Except in those cases, Nintendo actually had the better hardware, and still lost out to Sony. This isn't fanboy 'spouting', this is fact.

The Nintendo fans hold dearly to one fact, that Gameboy has, until now, been king of the handheld hill. But what they don't want to admit is that until now, there has never been reasonably priced, well marketed competition. Gameboy was always under $100 (DS is the first to break that barrier), even when it first released back in like '89. It also always had great battery life. And it had tons of third party support. All of the competitors so far have been way more expensive, usually debuting at $300, almost always had battery life in the range of 3 hours (supplied by YOUR AA batteries, unlike todays built in Li-Ion's), and usually didn't have very good third party support. That's why they all failed. Again, this is fact, not oppinion. For the first time ever there is a handheld system that is much more comparable to Nintendos system in all of these areas while surpassing it in so many areas as well.

I still don't get why you guys keep saying I have not weighed the other side of the argument. I have many times mentioned the plusses of Nintendos system... I obviously like the thing or else I'd have sold mine already, while I have not hesitated to bitch and gripe about all of the PSP's many flaws. Yeah, real fanboyish. You guys make it sound like all I say is how great the PSP is and how much the DS sucks... you really aren't reading my posts then. But I AM biased, while I haven't said the DS sucks, I do think PSP is the better hardware... but in the end I'm realistic and I know that that really means squat... it's all about the games and how good THEY are. I would LOVE to see the DS sell like crazy... because that would guarantee that it would get flooded with great games, which would make it sell even more, and around and around and around and then *I* would have lots of great games to play. Which in the end, is all I care about.

well the announcement on the euro release date settles it for me, i shall be purchasing the psp from the states.

i'm going to get in contact with an ebay seller i imported a rio karma from last year to see if he'd be willing to get me a psp and how much he'd want in the way of a fee.

right, i plan on getting Tony Hawks and Tiger Woods at launch and i'm thinking that i might as well go ahead and splurge out on at least one more game as its going to be a while before anything appears in the middle of the world, so what should i get?

i'm thinking about one of the following:

twisted metal
wipeout pure
need for speed
Death Jr. (if it makes the release date)

what would you guys go for, and why?!?

I'd go for a Japanese model.

Makes more sense in terms of compatability if you're in the UK.

You'll be able to get the normal pack as well. I dont think the value pack is worth it to be honest, and if you get it from the USA, you have no choice.

By the time the USA PSP comes out, the Jap PSP should be back to normal price, so cost wont come into it either.

.......
but anyway:
Yeah, I'd definately get Tiger Woods, and out of those in your list, I'd get Twisted Metal, as I have fond PS memories of it.

i'd go for ridge racers but thats not on your list ;)

so then I'd go for Need For Speed

nice last posts...

anyway, i felt like adding this quote by bob colayco of gamespot

"The pricing is disappointing when you think about what the PSP costs in Japan: under $200. Sony really pulled the rug from under us North American consumers. The only so-called value-added item I can see in the box is the 32MB Memory Stick, which is utterly ridiculous. What am I going to do with a 32MB Memory Stick? Load six MP3s on it? If you look on any pricing search engine, you can buy a 1GB Memory Stick Pro Duo for only $125, which will actually hold a feature length movie and a good number of MP3s. The 32MB one is about as useful as the 8MB flash card that comes with a digital camera. You know, the one that holds eight pictures? Oh! I forgot that Spider-Man 2 is included on UMD. Who cares?! If I did care, I'd do what everyone else is going to do: rip my DVD to computer and then load it onto a Memory Stick.

The good news is that there's going to be a hearty lineup of launch games on the PSP that I'm interested in playing, which is a lot more than can be said about the Nintendo DS's lineup...months after that system's debut. Ape Escape, Lumines, NBA Street Showdown, Untold Legends, and Wipeout Pure all look like compelling games. But despite a clear advantage in software, Sony is missing a golden opportunity here to jab a hot knife into Nintendo's complete dominance over this market. Or is it? I'm going to buy a PSP anyway, despite being annoyed at its price. And that right there tells you why Sony priced its unit the way it did. Because Sony can."

aye, but they are all to be released in the launche window, which is a predicament because I dont think SONY have specified the length of their launch window

I myself am rather pessimistic of the launch since I have never seen a launch with so many Grade A titles, normlly they come later

Says it all, really. They pulled the same trick with the PS2. Just wait a few months and you'll get a better deal.

I can't understand why only now people are just looking at the extra items in the value pack like they are just completely worthless.

I LOVE the headphones that come in this thing, they are the best sounding headphones I've had to date, with a lot of bass and very clear sound... the remote is handy as well for leaving the PSP in the case while listening to MP3's. I guess a lot of you probably already have nice headphones though, whereas I dont have an MP3 player or anything that came with some so the PSP's are really my first set of good headphones in a long time.

The case itself, IMO is not even optional.... of course, maybe you guys would rather buy a different case, in which case, yeah then it's a waste for you. I like the case it comes with myself.

The wriststrap... well... it's white. if only it weren't white.... anyways I dont use it as I have a neckstrap for hands free carrying. But otherwise... I think the wriststrap is useful as... well the thing can be kinda slippery and a wriststrap ensures you wont drop it... why'd it have to be white....

The cleaning cloth... well... hey if it's a nice cloth like the kind you buy at places that sell eyeglasses... hell the ones I buy from Lens Crafters cost like $10, and I use one of those on my PSP... it's very soft, lint free, and it doesn't scratch up the screen.

The memory card is fine for many people who don't really care about playing mp3's or movies on the thing but just want to play games, probably a significant portion of the people who are going to get one. How many of us have bitched at Sony before for making us buy our own memory cards for previous systems... now they finally throw it in, and you bitch about that too. I do agree though on this point as I never even opened my 32mb card, instead buying a 1gb right off the bat.

I just find it odd that everyone is so mad about this when almost everyone I've known of who bought a Japanese on so far have all bought the value pack and been happy with it..... I'm more than happy to buy another one when they come out here. But for guys who really dont want any of the other items it does suck to have to pay so much...

Here's a suggestion, why not sell the extra items you dont want to guys in Japan on Ebay who bought standard packs? I see people doing well selling the cases and headphones on there....

I agree that I envy you guys in the UK that you share regions with the japanese on this thing... the guy I just sold my unit to is in the UK, lucky bastard :D I agree for you guys in the UK.... wait for the US one to come out, then Japanese ones should bottom out on Ebay, then get yourself one of those.

Actually, let me add about the strap. I think its the best bit of the value pack. When playing outside like, I have the strap around my hand, in case I drop it (which I have done - only for the PSP to hang gracefully from my wrist). It's a saviour.

The case is great for keeping the PSP in my pocket. However, It means if you want to carry more games out and about you'd need a differnet case.

So to conclude:

Value Pack:

Strap - very useful (See above)

Case - are you a casual on the move gamer? Travelling to work, school, whatever? Then this is the case for you, since it will fit in a pocket and you can whip out your PSP in a blink of an eye. If you are going to mainly use your PSP on longer journies though, and you have some other kind of bag with you, the case may not be worth it as you cannot carry extra games.
Note: The case doesnt come with any type of seal (ie zip), the PSP may fall out if you are vicious with it. I got a woman to sow a zip on mine, so now it's boss.

Memory Stick - too small. Good for saves and a few MP3s. You will want a bigger stick. I have sold my 32mb MS.

Headphones and Remote - I like these headphones. As Bast says, great quality sound, but this is also the case with other headphones. They seem hard in my ear though. If you've already got headphones, do you need it?

Actually, I found a pretty good solution for using the Value Pack softcase, as well as taking a few games with me (seven total counting one in the system) the headphones and a cleaning rag. I bought a very cool little form fitting, zippered GBA SP hardshell case (soft felt on the inside just like the PSP soft cover)... So it's basically just a tad bit larger than the GBA SP itself, however inside will fit all of the items I mentioned above. I pack this thing full and just drop it in my back pocket the same way as I would the GBA SP itself, and I use a neck strap for the PSP so carry that around my neck. Still very portable and easy to deal with. With 6 games in there it fits pretty tight and the stuff doesn't flop around or anything like that... with less games stuff might be kinda loose but I dont think would get scratched do to the soft material lining the inside of it. Here are some pics :)

Works great for me and only cost me extra $5.

Well, next week I will have enough money to finish my computer, and maybe enough left over for a PSP.

Some prices on Ebay are amazing, I saw a PSP with Dynasty Warriors (Shit, I know) for £130, nice, eh?

what computer parts are you getting?
and i know, some of the prices on ebay are looking very tempting.

and i guess the value pack isn't that much of a ripoff. i'm gonna go ahead and preorder(system only) tomorrow or something

edit: never liked those bud earphones. they're ear killers :(
double edit:

don't tell me you bought that a8n-sli for that price! you can get it for as low as $180 on some places(monarchcomputer.com last time i checked). i myself didn't go the sli route and bought a msi k8n neo4 along with some other goodies.

later

little question that i've been meaning to ask for ages:

do the UMD discs offer full covering of the actual discs?

i ask as with my old MiniDisc player i could just lob the discs in my bag and the floppy disc style slidy bit kept the discs fine.
