Well, I know you're just joking about your GP64 wishes, but here's my wishes for a real next Game Park system:

Keep in mind I'm thinking in terms of keeping it affordable and not too hard to power.

1) 300 - 400Mhz ARM CPU. It could clock down too of course to save energy.

2) 64MB internal RAM.

3) 3D GPU, maybe that new ATI one for portable devices.

4) FPU - floating point chip to facilitate all sorts of cool stuff.

5) Foldable design like GBA SP, but maybe thicker and rectangular. Must keep the thumbstick!

6) Cleanly installed FLU screen with no trapezoid or other blemishes.

7) Li-ion battery pack. Maybe... Not sure it's really needed.

8) RF multiplayer hardware BUILT-IN. No seperate unit hanging off the side!

9) BLACK UNIT standard! White is OK, but I prefer black.

10) 4 face buttons, adding C and D above A and B. So we'd have 8 buttons altogether - SNES emus will need that and commercial fighting games would benefit.

That's all I'd want - and it's all completely doable.
 
You know, the 300MHZ Dell Axim pda can be had for about $180 now. If they improved the controls for gaming it could be the ultimate handheld gaming platform...
 
PocketPC's suck for arcade/action games. I have two, the most recent is an iPaq 1910 with 300Mhz (OC'ed) and 64MB RAM. Gorgeous screens, but PocketPC's appear to be slower than GP32 for gaming - probably due to video and/or memory interfacing issues.

Most significantly, the controls are ROTTEN. Miserable, painful... They just suck! I consider GBA to be slightly painful after a while, but PocketPC's are useless for more than 5 minutes IMO because the controls are so bad. GP32 really wins bigtime for control comfort. PocketPC's are awesome for strategy or adventure games using the stylus, yes, but if you're an action/arcade fan, they only disappoint you due to the controls. Sad, since there are some great emus for them like Pocket NESter and others.

Next, the gorgeous screens mean battery time is low, it's a PDA so it's not intended to play arcade style games for hours and hours. And the screens are vertical 240x320 - great for vertical arcade games like Pacman, sure, but for the vast majority of emulators you lose at least 16 columns of resolution (i.e. NES, SMS use 256 columns) or even far more in others (i.e. Genesis used 320 columns).

I actually carry my iPaq and GP32 with me everywhere, and GP32 is far preferable for games to me even tho the PocketPC's are "faster" and have better displays.

Now... If Microsoft got a clue from GP32, they'd do a gaming oriented PocketPC - that could be awesome, but it's doubtful since everyone is probably scared of Sony PSP right now. I wonder if Tapwave Helix will still come out - that sounded like it could be similar to GP32 only better in some ways, but we don't really know since it could just be vaporware...
 
I have serious doubts about the PSP.

Battery life is going to be REAL bad, a golden rule for portable devices is NOT TO HAVE MOVING PARTS!!!! Why do you think CD players are getting replaced by solid state storage mp3 players?

Also, the power of the handheld may be incredible, but so was the lynx for its time, and it was one hell of a battery eater.
 
I respectfully disagree with your argument about battery life / moving parts. My minuscule Minidisc portable plays about 60-70 hours off one charge. That has moving parts. The entire Playstation was already shrunk down into a single chip with about 30-50% the power requirement of the original hardware, and stuffed into the PS2. It is perfectly conceivable that it has been substantially optimised even further in it's next iteration for such a task. It is tried and tested technology, ripe for the job.

To be honest, it's something that's going to trouble Nintendo far more than Gamepark. The developer philosophy with Sony's platfroms is like most of the big players in the industry, including Nintendo: very, very closed. Gamepark adopt a completely different open platform approach, encouraging all and sundry to throw everything at it and see what sticks. None of this license and TRC crap. They are in a completely different field.

IMHO open source/platfroms are the future.
 
but minidiscs have no complex chips etc to take up more power, it is a very simple device.
MP3 CD players dont have anything near the lifespan of a non-mp3 discman.

Also, movable parts makes the handheld easier to break.
 
Hmm... my CD MP3 player has a battery life of 24 hours continuous play in MP3 mode (nearer 30 in normal) so its not a *huge* hit (2xAA, BTW).

Also, some laptops have batteries that last ~10 hours; which is worth considering. Whilst they're a lot more buly than any feasible handheld, even if you hlved the battery-size, I'm guessing an optimised PSX take up substantially less power than a Sony VAIO 1GHz. So battery life could be dealt with; it'd just have to be a custom lptop-esque battery...

That said, I agree with the thing about Open Sources being the way forward. Unless Sony decide to do this thing OS, its going to be some time before the amateur dev community gets going for it. Nintend's going to have to do quite a lot to get round this piece of hardware, I somehow suspect, but Gamepark will probably be largely unaffected, except to glean fewer of the people who simply want the best thing around power-wise as compared to what's actually available for it and at what price.

Minidisc ain't that simple. Not in the league of PSX, but easily in the league of MP3-CD. It's doing the same level of processing with ATRAC streaming as would an MP3 streaming CD. And the battery in this thing is an absolutely puny 1.2v 1350mAH Ni-MH. Considering my first Minidisc player used to only get 5-6 hours off one charge (and was less featured than my latest MD, and considerably more recent than the PSX) it shows what can be done when technology is optimised. In any case, it negates the argument of moving parts=poor battery life.

PSX specs aren't exactly that epic anyway. 33MHz CPU, 2MB RAM, 1.5MB VRAM... the Geometry engine/GPU have plenty of scope for optimisation. What it has it uses well. Hell, they could probably stick a load more VRAM and system RAM in it now. It's well within the realms of a big-budget Japanese company like Sony to shrink something with this power into a handheld.
 
They do have laser keyboards. Kind of like holographic ones.

And about the psp. The minidisc isnt the thing that sucks up battery power. The LCD, Chips, CPU also take power. DUH!

No sh** Holmes. Gosh, whoever would have thought in this day and age we'd have a portable device with an LCD, chips and a CPU? Un heard of. :rolleyes:

I believe I made references to the "chips" in my former post? CPU? RAM? The "minidisc thing", as you put it, was addressing the original argument of moving parts taking too much power to be practical in a portable device.

As for the laser keyboard of which you speak, here is more on it.

sorry but they dont have anything this technical at nasa, what makes you think a small company is going to release something like this for a minimal ammount that is affordable to anyone other than bill gates.
all i want the gp64 to have is more powerful cpu, bluetooth, and just better storage.
 
Anyway, never mind all this surround cine-screen what-have-you, what's wrong with good, ol' fashioned neural interfacing? :p
 
a couple years ago i think samsung(or one of those korean monopolies) demoed its 3d television projector thingy they were working on, its supposed to come out in a couple years. It was all over korean news
