I have been looking around the web about the GP32 prior to actually buying one and keep finding contradictions about the handhelds current capability ~ could somebody please clarify the following:

1. Runs PC Engine games perfectly

2. C64 emulator is getting there (now runs T64 and has sounds at runs at 100% frame rate)

3. Runs Sega master system games 100%

3. Can run GB color games 100%? (this is most important to me a@ present)

Cheers

Hmmm... I can give you my personal experience. (Results and opinions may vary. :D)

1. PC Engine for me has run EXCELLENTLY. I've never actually played PCE before now, but I'm very impressed.

2. I haven't used the C64 emulator but I've heard good things. Snaff, the author has been excellent in releasing updates, so we're all hoping he keeps it up.

3. SMS games run great too. There can be some crackling in the sound sometimes (only in certain situations in my experience), but otherwise it runs great. Sonic anyone? :)

4. GPVGB 0.11 runs... good. I have had some trouble with it. Mostly just sprite priority glitches and other small things. IT's SO close to being perfect, it's really unfortunate that it hasn't been updated in so long. You may want somebody elses opinion though, cause I haven't used it THAT much.

Hope this helps!

I am one of the people having problems with GPVGB 0.11. Frankly, it doesn't work. It hangs on every ROM I have tried (all ROMs that work elsewhere).

Is there a source available for version .007 (or is it .07)? I can't find it anywhere. I have heard earlier versions work for the unlucky people who can't get v.11 to work.

Cheers guys :D

The Gp32 community seems really helpful ~ emu's seems to be getting better by the week ~ however £150 notes for the console / smart media does seem a tad expensive ~ the more it develops the better

It appears that most users are happy ewith the platform and dont regret buying one (rhetorical question)?

GPVGB 0.11 -works fine for me - Almost all normal GB games seems to work(I've gone through a load) and most GBC games -

-games not supported as far as I have played -

Tony hawks 4, Icarus Kid, Alone in the dark(has glitches), Resident Evil Gaiden, ISS(glitchy but works) - most rpgs seem to work - I would say 80% compatibility of games in my opinion.

Its definitely NOT over priced :- to justifty the expense

--Combine all the emulated consoles and the roms\games you could play on them most surely surpass any other system - thus a HUGE library of games ! - which is ever-growing with the amount of emulators being developed and have been developed.

-..give it 6\12 months or so - and I would expect to see most 8bit/16/bit consoles emulated to reasonably level(enough to play your fav game)

Cheers TimthePIG,

Before i finally bite the bullet and order one ~ I appreciate everyones patience! is it ok to use / download stuff to ~ Im not a complete divot but I am certianly not a developer ~ the OS and programmes are easy to install?

The other thing ~ if I get one this week ~ what can i exepct to play with no problems e,g

Spectrum C64 Sega master System, game Gear Roms? Any help relayy appreciated! ;)

It's relatively easy to setup. Don't expect it to work out of the box, that's all. When you get it, just go to http://www.gp32.com and it's pretty linear. If you have any problems, ask us! We like to help people!

1. It runs PC Engine games near perfectly - sound craps up sometimes (same as all emulators - Fantasy Zone is the main culprit). SuperGrafix games don't work (SF2CE, Ghouls 'n' Ghosts). No CD support, obviously. It doesn't have any obvious faults and is more than sufficient.

2. Framerate isn't 100%, sound isn't 100%. Framerate can be set to every 2nd frame (~30fps?) with no sound or about every 4-5th frame with sound. The sound is too high a pitch, distorted and is pretty much incomplete (turning it off after turning it on does not mute the sound!). Game support is near perfect of course, and quite often if a game doesn't work, it's just your version.

3. SMS runs 100% except PCM sounds and FM module support (and paddles, and lightguns, and 3D goggles, etc...). Compatibility is high. Saving is supported. No faults here, really.

4. Haven't tried cos' I got a GBC flash cart anyways. :)

EDIT: beta4 of frodo runs programs with sound with frameskip set to 3.

Thanks again, looks like my plastic will take a battering, that was one of the other options gameboy advance and a flash card ~ at least I know i will get quality playback of decent games ~ however retro gaming (ahh those memories) is so much fun. Decisions Decisions.

Cheers Guys ~ I will be posting ahgain if i need some help with the software ~ by the way where do you get the movie player from?

i must comment on most peoples opinions here about the emus
firstly the pc engine plays spot on i have a pc gt hand held
and trust me i would rather play the games on the gp32 thats how good i think it runs on it,ok so some games dont work probs the versions that u have ,but the sound is near perfect and oh my god outrun on the gp32 loooks awhole lot better on it.

the master system plays spot on too a few games sounds a bit funny but hey so what, game gear is support too they run kool too u can also stretch the screen for the game gear games if u need to.

c64 plays ace i have had no probs with anything if one gripe the dizzy games run a bit too fast !!!,sound is okish not perfect .

speccy emu no probs running games but i did find that the sound wasnt upto it.neither was the real speccy anyway no great loss.

snes9s port is kool but ultimately its on the slow side with sound support
and u def need sound on when your playing rpgs as i like, overall pretty high compatibilty with the games ,i had a problem with the super mario allstars though when i try choose a game it freezes??probs version i have will try diff one.

the other snes emu is spot on but no sound great compatibility with most games but i havent tried that many maybe 40 or so as something to do with the actuall rom size u can actually load (memory restrictions)

i havent tried the other emus as of yet im getting round to it
msx,wonderswan,neo geo pocket,or gameboy b/w color
also havent tried the scumm or hexen, doom ports
but rick dangerous is a treat and pinball dreams demo way kool B)

ive also installed the wind-ups and it runs supreme
no bios update as yet ,need few more peps reviews on this dont seem to be many before i take the plunge.

Can I just check ~ that Roms i already have for the PC Engine / Game Boy etc Do not need to be converted to work on the emulators on the GP32 ?

GPEngine will take roms in either .pce format or as a zip file with the .pce file inside the zip.

GB Emulator takes files in .gb or .gbc formats, I think.

SMS emulator takes .sms format or .ggg format (.gg format is the same, just rename it to have the extra G on the end. You might get it to work without renaming it, but I havn't tried too hard)

Nintendo emulator takes .nes files

Since most roms around are in those formats, you're probably fine.

SNES emulators take .smc files. Most Snes roms are in that format, though a few are in other formats. There are converter programs out there if it turns out you need them.

Although ive had trouble loading roms from zip with gpengine, but the roms arn't all that big unzipped anyway :)

odd, I remember someone saying gng and er...I forget, 1943 I think didn't work.

I forgot to mention, games with 3D effects (stretching, scaling, rotating, blahblah) run slow in GPengine if you don't increase the framerate. Outrun runs nice if you do that. Bomberman's title screen slows down!

Quite a few games don't work; Impossamole is one of them, Powerdrift is another. Then again, Powerdrift without hydraulics is dumb!

Powerdrift works for me too....
TO Everyone with A GPEngine EMU out there...make sure your batteries are just about 100%. I have found that your performance of your GPengine is affected by how much battery power you have left. I tried Powerdrift with mid to low battery power and it had major problems with sprite animation and background scrolling. Your batteries need to be optimal for most of the games to work. Just FYI

You're right, it works with these fairly new batteries...but it's glitchy as it is in Hu-go on PC...personally, I'll play the c64 version. It's less confusing (like I said, no hydraulics...it just feels so wrong...)

Impossamole still didn't work tho; it made a farting sound and reset the GP32 :)

eeeewwww....I hate when my GP makes those farting sounds, it really stinks...hehehe <_<
