okay sorry but i dont know much about computers so what are the advantages of ogg format? why should i use the oggvorbis player instead of the one that comes with my gp32.
Ok, How many hours of music in mp3 format can you fit on your 128mb smc to use in the built-in player and still sound good ???.

2 hours ?
3 hours ?
4 hours ?
5 hours ?

In Ogg format, it is possible to get upto 6 hours of music on a single 128mb smc and still sounds good considering, Thats why.

if you don't have commen sense that means the files are smaller
they have the same quality of mp3s

I switched to OGG not so long ago for all my music needs, it saved a bunch of space on harddisk (and gp32). The quality is the same (unless you set the encoder up otherwise), I converted mp3s to OGG using CDEX (there has to be better options out there - CDEX crashed on some files).

So Ogg is the go, especially for the GP32 where storage special is a premium. The player i am using at the moment (yogg) works well, but i will probably switch to this one for a whiles to see how it compares. I'd really like it if it could be made to shut the screen down to conserve the battery (i have no idea how much it would save, but it would be a nice option - hint hint)

How many kbps should I convert It to?
I use no constant bitrate, but the "Quality q=2" setting that results in a nominal bitrate of 96kBit and an effective of ~90kBit. In that way I'll get >3 hours of music on one 128MB SMC.

Dang, I guess I should really put up a faq on the project homepage.

only use OGG for gp32 right now, does winamp play OGG files?

aapje89 said:
Yes, do that please.
This should happen sometime this weekend.

Could you put also a pre-configured ini file on the site?
D'oh! I forgot to state that the config file is optional. My defaults are compiled in. So there's no need for an ini file, neither on the GP32 nor on the homepage.

OH, but when I run it from wind-ups, the screen turns blu and then it resets, I have ogg files in GP:\mp3 en in gpetc, do I have to put them somewhere else?
In the picture on your site I saw they were in a folder called ogg, but in what folder
is that?

yes, winamp can play ogg. (plug-in support)

and foobar2000, which is best music player on windows, supports ogg originally. :)

only iTunes can't play ogg. :p

Just rename the folder mp3 to ogg, or create a folder called ogg in the root directory.
The next version will feature an option "file.ogg.dir", where you can set the directory the files come from.

GUI & font should be enhanced. :)
Make a suggestion how. Font is bound to 8x8 pixels. I can give you documentation on how the font is organised, so that you can draw your own, or rip them from any C64 demo or game. :p The GUI is as informative as it could be on the small screen. I want info there, not eye candy.

and background image support will be cool.
Ain't gonna happen. A background image just slows down the redraw of the screen (and also causing a reappearance of the GP32 sound bug), and degrades the readablity of the text. This player is for listening to music and other stuff, not for watching pretty pictures. I use it as a walkman replacement, so most time it's in some pocket, unregarded. Sorry, but I'm too old for nicknacks, I want functionality. You can download the source and hack it to your own needs anyway, or build your own player with the GpTremor library that will be released soon.

Hint: There's an Ogg PlugIn for Microsoft DirectShow, so the media player will also play Oggs. Just google for OggDS.

good release Olli, its great.

personally i use Audiograbber (www.audiograbber.de), which just became freeware. Its great, and it allows you to convert CD´s or even MC´s into MP3, Ogg and others. It doesn´t crash on some files like cdex does and it can normalize the fiels automatically. just go and try it. If I remember right, a quality setting of 0.3 should be good for your GP

@SvOlli: am I really the only one on your mailing list? :D

EDIT: Audiograbber downloads:

http://www.audiograbber.com-us.net/download.html

you can also find language files there, since AG is a german program

I thought of that when I started this project, but the official docs state that turning of the LCD for a longer time will result in damaging it. I also doubt that it will increase the battery lifetime by far.

Thanks, but my real-life nickname is SvOlli, really... ;)

Yep. Just checked: 'til now you're the only one.

BTW: It would be nice if someone could draw me a logo and icon for SvOrbis. Logo should be 200x24 pixels in size, maybe slightly larger with a GP32 standard 256 color palette (RRR GG BBB). How about something like a graffiti tag?

will there be unifont support? (kor)

i wanna see titles on my own language.
Nope, ASCII only (Characters from 32 to 127).
Hey, I'm German, and I can't see my umlauts either. ;)
On the other hand... you've got the source, you can do it.
And I'm taking contributions... B)

yes, there is one (i gues it is, it looks like one for me), not sure about the combination right now, but the marked file will be highlighted red in the playlist.
