Back :)

Ok, PPC isn't for me, and I'm now bored of Zodiac devving, and I've not released anything yet !

I've sold the PPC, and the Z, well, I'll be keeping it as a PDA, but doing little development for it. I don't know what it is, but coding for the GP32 seems much more fun.

Now, do I keep my FLU or upgrade to a BLU? Does anyone have both a BLU and a Z and can compare image quality?

Secondly, is FLU firmware compatible with the BLU? I seem to remember something about holding down a button for the backlight?
The BLU question depends where you most use the GP. If you mostly use it in the dark, and found yourself using the light on the FLU mostly then I would definetly reccomend the BLU.

The BLU has better color saturation, contrast, and doesn't have that annoying bright border around the screen. Plus you don't see any dust like you do on the FLU. I have a non lit GP32 for the outside and a BLU for inside use. You can see the screen with the light off on the BLU but like the Zodiac it is dark with the light off. As for sharpness it is perfect, razor sharp. Any fuzziness and or noise/lines etc you may have seen in screenshots is because of the camera. The Genesis emu fills the GP32 screen perfectly, without the need for the filtering like the Zodiac, which causes fuzziness on the Z. It looks stunning on the BLU. The colors are so vibrant. You own BOR looks great and I can see details in the video that I never saw on the other GP32s.

I have both GP32 and Z to compare. The BLU is not quite as bright as the Z. I would bet it is to get acceptable battery life out of it. Remember the GP32 must be practical on off the shelf AA batteries and doesn't use the LiIon rechargeables like PDAs do. So battery life is more of a concern. The more photons you pump out the more energy it takes. My Zodiac doesn't get that great of battery life when running emus at full brightness so I have to turn it down anyway.

The brightness of the BLU is still good though and is a good trade off between brightness and battery life.

Well, for the people who are still reading this thread, here's a short update on what I'm doing at the minute.

GBA DynaRec - Runs Rotozoomer demo and not much else. Project now put on the back burner. It was meant to be for both the GP32 and Zodiac, but I don't think I'll bother with Zodiac support now, so may as well just leave GBA emulation to GPAdvance, which will runs the runs a lot quicker with a higher compatibility anyway.

GPLynx - Still under development. Now contains huge chunks of Handy source code as there's very little in the way of technical documentation out there. Unfortunately, it's quite slow now. Expect some kind of alpha tonight.

Don't worry many of us are still reading this post ;)

I'm really waiting to see a true great Lynx emu, do you think it'll be possible to handle full speed emu one day on GP32?
and is it still slow at 166Mhz??

Alot of courage & support for all your projects ;) Carry on you're always doing some great job :)

thanks :)

Welcome Back!

edit: eww i just read about the gplynx alpha
spicy
so many emus released today
did the devs plan that?

Well, here it is:

GpLynx Alpha

Note that this in an alpha release, so it requires the following conditions:
  • There is no menu
  • It only runs at 166Mhz
  • An Atari Lynx ROM dump must be present in the "GPMM" directory called "lynxboot.img"
  • An Atari Lynx Game ROM must also be present in "GPMM" called "golf.lnx". These are standard Handy-type game roms.
  • There is very little error checking
  • It's slow
  • There's no sound
  • Standard "No Warrantee/Guarantee/etc" disclaimers apply: If this version blows up your gp32, kills your cat, burns down your house, etc, etc. It's not my fault.
Notes:

If you don't know how to dump the ROM from your Atari Lynx console, then you may find a suitable rom dump via Google as Handy uses the same filename for the rom.

I'm sure everyone knows better than to ask for Lynx game roms...

This version should not be distributed outside of GP32X.

This is great! This emu shows promise. You are the only one working on Lynx. Squidge you are our last hope for Lynx :)

cool i will give this a whirl. lynx was always a favorite of mine, bought one back in the day. lots of weird and different games (fun, though!)

thanks very much for your hard work!

This is really a great work :) I'm sure with some improvement we'll got a perfect Lynx emu thanks to you Squidge :) Please keep do this great work :)

Incredible first release!
I just tried a few games, and they all worked!

Works:

APB
Batman Returns
Blue Lightning
California Games
Chips Challenge
Ninja Gaiden
Rampage
Warbirds

All games run at least at half speed. I noticed a graphical glitch on most games: a horizontal line of jumbled pixels about 10 pixels from the bottom.

Keep up the great work!!

Ed

Excellent, just had a go at Xenophone and it works nicely.

I like how this is your first release (and its an alpha) but it is still better than the previous two attempts.

Again good work Squidge.
