So its my birthday in two days (10th June, legal drinking, GBAX2004, w00t!)

i've received a shiny new magic internet box from the rents and general family for uni and am looking at picking up some type of toy as a present from the girlfriend and any cash i happen to come into.

i've looked around on ebay and theres a number of dreamcasts available for about £30.

my questions are these, how "easy" is the emu scene on the dc? i've looked around dcemulation a bit and it seems like the perfect stationary compliment to my gp32, 16bit and better emulation but on my tv! i've read that every console can boot cd-rs, is this true? would i be able to use games i've acquired via bits and donkeys as well as snes and megadrive etc?

any help would be greatly appreciated!

A Dreamcast SNES emulator that I picked up off Suprnova around a year ago was great.

Just burn the CDI file to CD and voila, around 450 SNES roms and the emulator ready to play.

Amazingly easy. About as difficult as gp32. There's guides all over the place if you get stuck. Or you could just ask on the bigger dc forums about.

Not every DC can read CD-R's I'm not entirely sure which models and how you know but I would look it up on google for info prior to purchasing. As for emulation, it's piece of cake just avoid using Nero 6 if you can.

Well, I know there's 2 modes of NTSC ones. On the bottom of the DC, there's a number that's circled right next to the frequency type/region (NTSC/PAL). I know on US I think 1 is the version can play CD-Rs and 2 is the version you can't. Though I'm honestly not sure what PAL versions are like. I would do some research on that topic first, but I hope that gives you an idea.

well hopefully i'll have a successful bid on my second try realy cant wait has anyone played house of the dead 2 with light guns and is it any good ? !?

Thanks for all the info guys, read the compatibility article and i think i'll be pretty safe!

thanks for the heads up on nero, i use that program for everything, i'll stay away for this though!

its excellent

I had it with 2 light guns

MAKE SURE THEY ARE BOTH OFFICIAL, coz one of mine wasnt and it didnt work very well, even if i callibrated it perfectly,

The official one are so good its sexy

One exclemation mark is sufficant.

Im going to buy one of these things soon, the cancer shop had one for a while for £20 with wacky races, I really should have bought it.

Be very careful....wacky races will take over your life...get 3 extra contollers and you can create a cult like I have.

Yes, emulation on dreamcast is great. I picked up a second DC with about 30 copied games at a car boot sale for £20 a few weeks ago, of course, it didn't work, but I opened it up and tinkered a bit (which really just involved shaking the pieces about) and it worked. Been playing Megadrive emulation on it- absolutely perfect since the emulator is actually one from the official Sega Smash Pack that was released, except someone's hacked it to play any rom. Snes isn't as good, but runs about 80% speed with sound. And Dreamcast games kick ass. Plays MP3 cds and VCDs too. DC rules. I'll stop blathering on now.

Buy a dreamcast.
