England V France

I think we have as good as chance as any. Especially since the Dutch, the Germans etc have shaky teams. (and losing friendlies to the Irish and the Hungarians respectively). Theres probably four or five teams that can win it - us included.

Heres hoping that the chunky fat man Roonevator gets the golden boot award.

(He's had a shocking season this year, but if the boy does good in the tournament - then thats all that matters!)

You dont watch football so you wouldnt have known that Ireland beat Holland with a Robbie Keane goal in Amsterdam (their home turf coincidentally). I'm not questioning Ireland - its Holland who have the shaky defence.

thebluenewt: you said that you were bugged by people who dislike football for apparently no reason, and painted the picture of it being glory, fun, excitement and love for your team. I painted an opposite picture, intentionally reversed to highlight the bad points. To you, who thinks that every football match goes peacefully with a bacon sarnie and the glinting, happy eyes of children, I ask what decade are you living in? I experience a lot more of the bad parts of football than the good parts.

Ok, you're right I didn't phrase that very well, I don't have anything against people who don't like football I just think they're missing out, but obviously that's their choice!

I'm still confused by your comments, violence at football matches in this country is basically non-existent now. There are loads of kids at matches (I'm sure their eyes are happy and glinting) and aside from in some rather unenlightened countries racism is rare.

Unfortunately a small group of thugs (I refuse to call them fans) do follow England around, the FA do everything they can to stop them but it's not easy. It doesn't help that UEFA let anyone buy their tickets of the web...

I probably need to make myself more clear also... in general I think we have little violence in football in this country. Where I live it's different, but also abroad.

I think the turning point in English hooliganism was not long after the Hillsborough disaster (where a lot people died from the crowd surging forwards) when all stadiums worth their salt became "all seater" stadiums. Sure, there probably is a certain section of society that prides itself on violence on others (like Millwall fans possibly), but it is wrong to characterise regular fans like this. (which I'm sure most people here don't).

@ Rico : If you ever got tickets and went to the family enclosure at Highbury (Arsenal) you'd be converted on the spot. Unfortunately there is a 10 year waiting list. :(

When I watch England v France - I'll be cheering for England, but if Tezza scores, or my mate Zinedine I'm not going to take it from them, since they are the best in the business :D [aside from Becks & Co.]

Anyway, can this thread stay as a England v France thread, rather than all this anti football/english bollocks. Thanks. :) "Friendly Community" and all....

Watch it... if people want to take something slightly off topic they should be allowed to, debates don't make us any less friendly, and we certainly shouldn't avoid any kind of debate for that reason. Frankly your comment worries me about how you percieve free speech.

He was only making a suggestion...besides, some of this Irish/English stuff certainly isn't friendly.

yeh. it was only a suggestion. I'm no communist. Freedom of speech is cool :D If people don't like football for whatever reason then I can understand that.

On another point, theres been a few films - I saw a bit of that "Mean Machine" the other night on Sky, looked ok I guess, and had the cast from Lock Stock... the other film I was going to mention was a film called "ID" which is good and shows how hooliganism and anarchy can arise in the unlikeliest of people etc.. (It has a couple of people from Eastenders too!)

I've read that a large amount of hooliganism abroad is my business-types who can afford the flights. They use it as some crazy stress-relief system.
