Ram Upgrade

cobbleware doesn't say whether it's the right chip or not, it gives a load of technical info about the chipbut i dont know whether it's the right one or not. the detail given about it on the site where the bloke who i'm getting it off got it:
ram chip

The chip that is used on Cobbleware.com is a VDATA 16MX16-SDRAM CHIP

The micron chip is compatible ... because it is also 16MX16-SDRAM However, the Micron chip is faster becasue it is CAS LATENCY 2 ... and the VDATA Chip is CAS LATENCY 3

The Micron Number you need is: MT48LC16M16A2TG-75 this is the CAS LATENCY 3 part number.

Hope this helps.

(FYI - I have worked in the memory business for the last 8 years)

The data sheet says it can run at CL3 or CL2. At CL2 it can run up to 133MHz and CL3 up to143MHz. Will this not work on GP32 then?

I haven't looked at RAM much since I did some simple static RAM to VME bus thing at Uni! Not entirely relevant!

Darkfader's site has a list of common manfacturer's and model numbers for memory that is suitable to do the upgrade:

http://darkfader.net/gp32/morehw.html

Your Micron RAM is listed for doing a 32mb upgrade, so should be suitable. Might be worth looking at the datasheet for the Micron RAM and cross-referencing it with the info on cobbleware.com. I'm not sure if things like the memory's number of refresh cycle's, etc, make a difference if they are not the same.

I've also just noticed that on Mr Spiv's site, there is an update on his progress on changing MMU functions to support 32mb/64mb RAM, as well as some updated chatboard example code (kbdtest_fifo_04)

so it will work? does the FW or existing apps need to be changed to run on an upgraded (not neccessarily make use of the extra ram, just run as normal)?

where can i find such ram-modules ?

best would be a german shop
You can buy them from Farnell. See the link above. They have a German site iirc. Go to www.farnell.com and click on the German flag.

(edit: Can't see them on the German site -> sorry -> they can probably order them if not though)
