The audio problems I have are probably more to do with the hardware than the kernel. I'm not even sure audio ever worked at all on this prototype.
Maybe there a re no speakers installed. Or did you hit the same issue as Michael recently? aplayer expects a 4-channel audio file. The first two go to the headset and the other two to the handsfree speakers. If you supply a 2-channel audio file, it is not easy to get sound from speakers. The trick (for testing but not for daily use) is to use "play" (sox) to remix the channels.
No, the audio device locks up when you try to access it. Since the same config worked fine on the uevm and the older prototype I assume it's a hardware thing. (or maybe an outdated dts for this board version)

4.15-rc8 may not have all fixes, so you could try a newer one. Letux-4.16.15 is the current "mostly stable" = "latest" version. (letux-4.17.x has at least two known instabilities).
BTW: there is also a cumulative changelog for the letux-kernel (but it doesn't cover upstream changes):

but this could also indicate a hardware issue with the MCPDM connection between OMAP5 and TWL6040.
